It's the whole shy being overwhelmed by emotions trope. Like how Ishida stutters like an idiot for the rest of the film when she pays him any attention.
The aesthetic and style betrays it but this is an anime about how Japanese "White trash" interacts with each other. Ishida is a go no-where idiot without any virtue. He only changes into an average -human bean- after being ostracized and betrayed and having his mother mauled and having to pay reparations. I didn't bully, harass, and assault handicapped girls while I was growing up, where the fuck is my undeserved adoration?
If you strip away the KyoAni animation and "this is how you should feel" musical cues, this is actually a really wierd and ugly story. Reminds me of the old film KIDS(1995) for some reason. (Main in kids runs around with aids and fucks HS/middle school virgins) - The main in kids is just an ugly person. So is Ishida and so is his entire group. The school is retarded and Nishimiya is retarded for letting it get as far as it did. The whole premise is really stupid.
