He was, though. Don't confuse individual courage with need to do unsavory deeds in order to advance your goals. Kircheis was adamantly against the latter which severely limits your options seeing as you can't always get ideal situations where you can walk away with clean hands.

Oberstein is a great character with a great arc. Along with reuental and rubinsky definitely my favorite characters from purely a story and character writing perspective, regardless of whether I agree with what they do.

I think the problem is these are mutually exclusive seeing as Kircheis has shown all the signs that he would actually defeat Yang in a straight up fight. As someone said Kircheis was probably the most balanced and overall best commander in the show.
