Well, OP picked a shitty example, but the thing about Shikamaru is actually right. Not only Shikamaru, there are abilities like Ino's possession jutsu that could have been extremely useful if the author went for more creative fights/teamfights instead of just spamming ki blasts and eye hacks.

The fights are better without sound, because they can never get the sound synced up properly, and it leaves a soft feeling, it doesn't convey the impact very well.

It's because they have to adapt a different medium. You read the panel in 2 seconds but when adapted into anime it takes 30. That's what creates pacing problems in fights when adapting from manga.

Really? I think that the fights, combined with the cool abilities and character designs (not their personalities or writing, just the design themselves) are the only good thing about this pile of shit series.
The fights are so badass that I can't help but overlook the shitty logic, writing, bullshit asspulls/comebacks/survivals that they all have.
That being said, once I got to the end of the pain arc, I fucking finally quit this garbage series (although I look up summaries of the rest). The fight with Pain wasn't all that great and the complete utter bullshit ending where he sacrifies himself and revives all the people he killed was the last straw for me. Fuck you kishimoto you stupid nigger you created a world with great potential and completely fucked it up.
