but what about konosuba, clannad, NNKX, sakurasou etc. where the best girls are clearly way too good for the MC yet they win anyway.

Usually they don't win because Japan has shit taste and retarded idea about starcrossed love.

In a harem situation, heroines are given different personality traits so that one of them will connect with the viewer moreso than the others. Unless a work follows the format of Amagami, there is normally only one winner, but that winner may or may not be the viewer's personal favourite.

Is there a trend of the most well-developed and likeable characters not ending up with the MC? Perhaps. It could be deliberate, in order to evoke a reaction from the online community and encourage shippers to show their support. This could accelerate sales of official character goods.

I think Nanami had feelings for Sorata before he met Shiina, but those feelings didn't mutually blossom until they started getting to know each other when Nanami moved in to Sakurasou. They eventually set aside their feelings for Mashiro's sake. It doesn't necessarily mean Nanami is best girl (personally I feel that she is) but the situation was set up so that it shows how selfless Nanami is.

i agree that nanami was best girl by a ridiculous margin, and her selflessness just made it harder for me to watch sorata and shiina shit all over her feelings for him.
