One of the loveliest shows this season. Very comfy and made me enjoy Yuri again. Kanna is daughterfu of the century and tohru is legitimately lovely to watch. Here's my perspective as someone who just finished it.

The main issue is that the "formula" doesn't work. Maid Dragon is a SOL/comedy that is frankly not very funny and is at its best when it focuses on developing its characters and pushing its (mostly weak) narrative forward. It also has occasional meaningless fight scenes which contribute nothing to the quality of the series, and usually detract from it more often than not.

Basically, it doesn't work to Kyoani's strengths at all. Maid Dragon would have worked far better as a low-budget adaptation by another studio. It's clear Kyoani wasted a lot of money animating the fight scenes, the OP, the comedy scenes, etc, and that was a complete waste of time, as none of those matter to anyone who would actually like the show. There wasn't even any point in putting pretty animations on the SOL scenes, since frankly, the character designs in this show suck and aren't worth the budget. Those would have worked just as well if it was done by studio DEEN like Konosuba.

In summary, it was a huge waste of time and money and a poor executive move from the studio. Literally DEEN would have done it better.

It's the first season of a new IP. Expecting it to sell like Haruhi which already has a large established following is absurd.

It did better than Musaigen no Phantom World and Kyoukai no Kanata but worse than Amagi Brilliant Park and Hibiki! Euphonium. Obviously its not going to compete with Yaoi bait like Free! So I'd say it did average for the studio in recent times.

Frankly, Maid Dragon didn't really have a point. Other SoL anime generally have some sort of point to them. In shows like Sakamoto, the main character is supposed to be the "ideal" person you should strive to be, and thus it becomes a teaching anime. One to pass on the morals and values of living in the modern day while reflecting several different situations of varying degrees to show an "idealized" form of how to deal with them.

In other SoL, like say Gabriel-Dropout or Kill Me Baby, it's meant to be a humorous reflection of the everyday life plus or minus "extra" elements like supernatural beings or outlandish jobs, etc.

Then you have the SoL of self-insertion and nostalgia like Azumanga and Lucky Star, the idea of reliving the past high school days hanging out with a cool group of people who are friendly with each other to recapture that feeling or experience it for the first time.

Dragon Maid had none of this.

There was hardly any reflection on the nature of humans that resonates with the viewer, because most of the issues are basically dealing with fantasy racism and other unreal concepts, along with the show awkwardly getting into philosophical tangents like "do you actually like humans?" when the show had done nothing to suggest the answer should ever be "No".

The humor didn't really make sense. This is the part where normally I would oversimplify a joke, but honestly it's hard for me to do that because the joke was usually all over the place. The joke is...this person is a dragon? Is that even a joke to begin with? Even the straight-man rebuttals of Kobayashi felt lazy and uninspired.

Self-inserting was basically improbable. Nobody other than a scaly has ever made the fantasy of living with a maid who is also a dragon, and even now, I can't say that makes me go doki-doki. Not even touching the fact that this is Yuri with a cynical and kind of unfun, doofish main character.

If this show had focused in one area, it MIGHT have been a success.

Honestly, considering the dragons were quickly embraced by the community I didn't get any being different in a homogeneous society vibes. I think the themes are more simple currents of improbable family relationships and the tension between loneliness and accepting love other people bear you. You say "ham-handed", but more surface emotions can still really resonate. Idk what you mean by "lie", I think that's hyperbole desu m8. The characters grew throughout the show, from Kanna opening to Kobayashi, to Kobayashi coming to rely on touhru. Consider the scene where touhru has left, and Kobayashi is going through her chores: she struggles at first but it's not that she doesn't eventually handle them reasonably well, it's the dull pain of going through these motions and the reminder that someone she cares about is likely gone forever. Her respite from loneliness seems to be closing, and we see that reflected in her retreating back into herself. Also m8, keep in mind so much of this is taste.
