Yes, the characters and themes aren't original, but it's fine. The show plays out the characters to be campy as hell between the entire cast from the villains to the supporting characters, and that's what makes it enjoyable even if it's not extremely original.

Someone mentioned precure and the thing is not all precures are the same. Suite is my favorite for being extremely campy too and there hasn't been anything like it since then unless Mahoutsukai is like that but I haven't watched it yet.

That's a major part of what I like about it. It's a nice seasonal dose of straight mahou shoujo, which is surprisingly rare. The only other recent example that come immediately to mind is Houkago no Pleiades, which I also liked largely for the same reason.

Mostly end up picking up all the shows I leave except for a few randoms I cut for time or just aren't good. Watching 20 shows this season apparently. If I had to pick an AOTS, I'd probably say FAG. I just have so much fun watching it, it feels great. Take the most screencaps during it too, and that's a decent measure to tell if I'm enjoying the show.

This is the problem, you get this "fun and silly cast" 20-30 times every season. If the show doesn't have anything else going for it like some kind of not overly generic character in the main cast or interesting story, obviously people will ignore this. I don't know what you see in Sakura Quest. It has cute girls but the show itself is overwhelmingly average. The character arcs haven't been fulfilling and neither has the main plot since we haven't seen any results from their work despite being 7 episodes in. The development is especially weak when each character throws a tantrum and then comes back with no issue the next episode. The entire sub-arc with Shiori and giving special thanks in the credits was a lame way of giving closure.

Though it's going to be 25 episodes long so there's a chance for anything to happen, I don't see the appeal so far.

The references and shit don't really mean you HAVE to watch Tokimeki, they're just a bonus for those who did. And Kurumi, while she might be annoying as fuck and unlikeable at the beginning, does explain what the whole deal with her is well enough that watching anything else is not necessary, plus the explanation also makes her more sympathetic.

I dunno man, the whole scene with heinojou probably seems weird and out of place for anyone who didn't watch tokimeki. misty knight's random invincibility, literally everything about kuru--I mean miruku's character. I think this series is more of a season 1.5 than a side story or a season 2, and I'm banking on the idea that aoi/haruka will get rescued or kurumi will transform back into a human sometime towards the end and participate(if that doesn't happen I'll be disappointed t b h). I would feel sorry for anyone who didn't watch the previous series if this happens.
