It was pretty clear he had no idea of what he was doing from the get go. The whole thing is about how the protagonist attitude is shit but at the same he romanticizes his behavior and flaws like you wouldn't believe.
Also, if you were to read a Yahari thread on /a/ you would get the idea that everybody is reading a different novel.
