To put it simply, they used common settings in romantic shows as some strange story telling device to sell some friendship/character development. And while this isn't bad in itself, it was a massive waste of time that only ended in an awkward situation where the 2nd years are kinda divided (You and Riko are pretty much strangers to each other and there was even an awkward scene between the 2 in a bus)... in a season that focused on these characters while sidelining everyone else.
