It was the same for Bleach and its pace, it was always consistently slow since the beginning.

Maybe in the very early chapters, before had a chance to settle into any sort of pattern.

After the first boss, Fairy Tail immediately ditched any notion of a super powered martial arts system that played by any rules other than "good guys are winning, bad guys are winning, good guys are winning, bad guys are winning more than before and things look hopeless, bad guys beaten by burst of nakama power". The story and setting have also only ever been an excuse for these fights to happen. The shallow setting is arguably at the core of Fairy Tail's flaws.

Mashima's next work should really just be a character-driven comedy adventure that never tries for drama, since that's clearly what he wants to write. Alternatively, he should retire from writing and just be an artist.

I think it's fine this way. We all know that Mashima works hard if it involves the things he likes, and at one point had three serializations and had almost no hiatuses compared to other long-running series mangaka (looking at you, Togashi).

Don't get me wrong, I've never even liked FT to begin with, it was just something that I inflicted upon myself and just rolled with, you know, checking the new chapters every now and then in a kind of morbid fashion just to witness how miserable things could get. But this is the climax to a decade old series for fuck's sake. I'm not asking for much honestly. People were drawing comparisons with Bleach earlier in the thread and its disastrous ending but even then there was something, what with the bullshit arrow or whatever. Yeah it was underwhelming as can be but it was SOMETHING. It's 2017 and one of the most popular manga of the last decade ends his Big Bad by punching him really hard. And it's not even outdated really, it's just void of any creativity or inspiration.

It just feels like FT is that one kid in your class if you were a teacher. He keeps fucking his tests up, but you don't hate him or anything, you just want him to do better because you're a normal human being and you have expectations for your pupils. But as time goes by it's become more and more apparent that the little shit does nothing to improve and just stay locked up in his own little world. You start caring less and less as it's obvious he doesn't care about you either. And yet I still had hope that he would eventually show me a sign.

And I was wrong.

As someone who hadn't kept up on Fairy Tail due to how bad it got, how much build-up was there even to this chapter? To basically base an entire chapter around a single punch and a heroic sacrifice that wins the fight just seems more awful than any other shonen out there.

Okay so, the entire justification for Zeref's army and the Spriggans invading this continent, killing/torturing/humiliating/terrorizing its protectors and population was all because Acnologia was supposedly so strong, Zeref felt he had no other choice but to subjugate the entire country in order acquire its power, yes?

Yet Acnologia is about to be taken down by less than a dozen people on a ship, after those same people just finished killing off the entire army / Spriggan 12 of Zeref's? Am I getting this correctly?

Fairy Tail is and always has been about an unlikely hero beating the odds and defeating the villain. From Natsu beating Erigor, to Happy and Carla destroying the Grimoire heart the same themes have always stayed with the show. And if I had asked you at the beginning of the arc who was the least likely to defeat Acnologia, you most likely would of answered Frosch, Beth from Mermaid Heel or the real man Ichiya.
Also can nobody just appreciate the satirical value of Ichiya friggin ICHIYA beating Acnologia? From what I've heard Bleach's ending was just a letdown, but this is comedy gold. This chapter shall finally cement Fairy Tail as one of the greatest long-running comedies of all time!
When you've got a dragon problem, you need a real MAAAAANNNNN to take care of it.
