Usually in Japan they have "special awards" or "Excellence awards" for films that are runner ups.

That said, these lists are pretty distinctive. Most of the time Your Name comes in a close second behind In this Corner, or vice versa. And if you're saying Yokohama award is a big deal, KnNW also won Mainichi.

And in Japan, there's always bias toward wartime films. You can't forget that. Same way shitty war movies win Oscars.

In either Case, Katabuchi is a far less talented director than either Yamada or Shinkai, I think. He's not terrible, but he doesn't have the eye for editing and cinematography the Shinkai does, nor Yamada's dedicated animation background. Arete was good, but Mai Mai Miracle was bleh.

Let's not let contrarianism and hipster shit get ahead of ourselves, Kono Sekai has a load of issues too. Probably more than Knnw, honestly, it was a lot less ambitious.

But not as bad as Silent Shit.
