Exactly this. Especially if it's a Shonen. Seinen? Maybe. But if it's a Shonen forget about it. Don't take away any sort of grand philosophy from it. Don't act like the characters.

The "philosophies" are generic feel-good "follow your dreams and if you work hard enough you can succeed. Every shonen protagonist believes and lives by this, and they succeed. It's almost as if they're in a fantasy world.

The characteristics of protagonists in Shonen are commonly the same. They're stupid, annoying, rash, and weird, yet since they have friends they make it through just fine. Meanwhile in reality these are all undesirable traits, especially being stupid and annoying. You won't have friends for long acting like a Shonen character. You'll either be too edgy for anyone to want to deal with you, or too autistic.

I can only dream life is at all like a shonen. In reality life is rough, and while "life is hell sometimes" is a message in One Piece sometimes, you don't really understand just how bad it really is while being entertained. Reading about a guy who lives alone on a ship after having lost all of his friends doesn't truly allow you to understand how tragic of an experience that really is because you're simply reading two or three manga chapters. You're not alone on a ship for all those years yourself.

In concultion I think the problem is taking life lessons EXCLUSIVELY from shounen manga of course your life isn't going to turn out great if you just try to intimidate a comic book character exactly since he (or she(lol)) is obviously not presented with the same obstacles as you are. The reason I prefer to take lessons from One Piece compared to other Shounen battle manga is Luffys occasional cynism. I.E. he agree with Bellamy that strength is the main contributing factor to getting what you want, and the reason he's able to take back Nolans gold is simply since he's more powerful then Bellamy. He agree with Crocodile that Vivi is naive thinking she will be able to protect everything and he tells Vivi that to achieve ones goals, sometimes you have to make sacrifices, the sacrifices probably wont even be exclusively your own, sometimes you have to sacrifice your friends as well. Now the story doesn't play out as this, and Vivi ends up not sacrificing anything which is absolute bullcrap but whatever, it's aimed at children and they would be upset. I get annoyed at my fellow fans for not accepting this.
