Not that guy, but the pacing is absolutely glacial. I've gone through my fair share of lengthy VNs, but Umineko takes the fucking cake. The slowness of the build up in each route is exacerbated by after the first route ending you know that it gets crazy, so you can't help but feel impatient when you're reading through shit like glasses guy's dates with the maid and such. It feels like a chore to read for 80% of the novel and the 20% of awesomeness doesn't really make up for it. It's poorly paced.

Decent book with a good concept but bullshit answer. The way it ended was great except with the answers by the culprit. I agree with Ryukishi that if the answer was not given, people would call it a masterpiece. It really should have ended with the last person committing suicide. and nothing more. I asked my mother that love detective fiction if it would have been possible to solve, and she said no. There are some obvious hints, but it's not enough to point to the culprit.

More like the most useless.
The only thing that's good about her is her body.
Everything about Jessica is worthless and pathetic. She would have fallen in love and let herself be fucked by a goddamn servant.
She has bad grades.
She's stupid.
She has no future.
And she's not even feminine enough to just open her legs like a good girl for the family.

Golden Truth is essentially the human red truth.
It is the collective agreed truth formed by theorizing on the absolute truth.
For example, the family seeing a burned body with 6 toes gives rise to the golden truth of ''I gurantee that the body is Kinzo''. Everyone agreed based on the evidence that the body is likely Kinzo's but it doesn't mean it's the ''truth''. It could be a body of someone else, brought by Kinzo to fake his death, that also had an extra toe. This is why in ep 6, the two Beatrice use the Golden truth to accept magic. Because both of them believe that truth, it became a golden truth.

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little witch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Detective Academy, and I’ve been involved in numerous boardgames with witches, and I have over 300 confirmed solutions. I am trained in using my brain and I’m the top detective in the entire Sea of Kakera. You are nothing to me but just another mystery. I will wipe you the fuck out with logic the likes of which has never been seen before on this Fragment, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the telephone? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of goats across Rokkenjima and your closed room is being traced right now so you better prepare for the solution, maggot. The solution that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your catbox. You’re fucking figured out, kid. I can solve mysteries anywhere, anytime, and I can complete your puzzle in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my grey cells. Not only am I extensively trained in sealing things with duct tape, but I have access to the entire power of the Detective's Authority and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable mystery off the face of the Fragment, you little witch. If only you could have known what unholy solution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re getting the Trick Ending, you goddamn idiot. I will shit Blue Truth all over your catbox and you will drown in it. Your mystery is fucking solved, kiddo.

Was slightly pissed at the ending right after reading translated EP8. Now, years later, after replaying the game with voices and marathoning the manga I'm surprisingly liking it. All that being said, for me Umineko is still the greatest story ever told and I doubt anything will top it.

The true truth. Not the one Bernkastel showed Ange and Eva wrote down in the diary but the very core of the game. Why all of this shit happened in the first place. Basically, 'treat all the lovey-dovey and heart-warming moments shown in the game as the red truth and don't be a goat'.

Strong emotion influences a stronger imagination.
Imagine a random person you meet on the street talking about a wonderful golden land, and they invite you to join them. You'll probably think they're crazy as they prance around in a perfectly normal garden.
If it was your beloved family member showing you their golden land you'll see it differently.

If you do not value something, then you are unable to see its beauty and truth.
But in the opposite, if you love something, you tend to overvalue it from the truth and not see it for its flaws and what it truly might be.
Shakespeare put a lot of focus on that point regarding love and its disillusion. There's a reason why Ryukishi endlessly mentions Romeo and Juliette.

The "Truth Ending" is a bad ending because Ange didn't know how things happened. All possibilities were open, so she simply had to choose what to believe. The happy ending felt too easy, and with her filled with negative emotions she choose a sad ending which better suited her.

But, does this mean searching for the "one truth" is meaningless? Anything is possible, so it's better to believe in a truth that makes you happy. But personal feelings have no greater meaning. Is it wrong to believe that one truth is elevated above all other happy and sad possibilities? Instead of choosing anything else you choose to search for a deeper meaning even if it is unobtainable.

>I guessed the culprit but because he died I stop thinking

I read Umineko before reading Ten Little Niggers, and as a result I was totally expecting a faked death. To be honest, I guessed the culprit but only because of his profession, and the fact that his self reflection about the crime he was accussed of was different than the others, not a shred of guilt but missed most of the other stuff
>>
>>157230956
Hmm, to be fair, I had not read any detective stories before that one, so I hadn't considered the fake death. I considered it by the end, but it made no sense that the killer would also be found dead by the end.
>lol I'll just kill myself just because it would be cool if no one figured it out
Welp.

I personally started doubting the culprit when he started putting on airs by becoming the detective. I was all ''yeah that's what the culprit would totally do'' but then he died and stopped thinking. After reading Umineko and understanding that the culprit could use the doctor to fake the death, it becomes obvious.

>>157230956
I read Umineko first as well, but I guessed the male servant, Mr.Rogers was his name or something.
It's been a while, but from what I remember I thought it was him because of the insanely suspicious way they found his body. unlike the others, he was face down with an axe in his back (or something), and immediately after they glance at him the one woman screams about a wasp. They're then distracted and leave the room immediately. I was a little disappointed that it was the judge because I his death was the one I thought was too difficult to fake (bullet through the head). It makes sense if you look for motives, I guess I should have paid more attention to that.

Battler obviously didn't want to suspect anyone from his family, and also didn't even know he was supposed to be a detective. He was refuting the existence of the witch because it was the only thing he could do to piss her off, instead of trying to solve the mistery because "maybe the witch is hiding something on her riddles".

Which for me makes sense. As a reader, one gets the impression Beatrice is playing to get the mistery solved from very early, but for Battler as the protagonist the experience is different, it's pretty clear he was dropped in a game without even being explained what were the rules. If someone is put to play as a goalkeeper in a soccer match, but he doesn't know what soccer is or that he's in a game, it wouldn't be surprising to see him avoiding the ball instead of stopping it, and punching the other players because they keep throwing balls at him at high speed.

It's weird how Agatha Christie mysteries work. A lot of times, I can clearly see who the culprit is because of his/her motives, even if they are hard to deduce, but I can't see how they could do it. But sometimes, you can almost pick the killer by discarding everybody else, but you can't see why in hell would the murderer do that.

>>157230581

Ironically, she didn't like her most popular detective because he was an unsufferable Mary Sue, and her favourite detective, Miss Marple, was way less popular. By the way, I don't know if you know the character or not, but Miss Marple is way less Mary Sueish than most other detectives. In fact, is weird to see someone who can solve mysteries no one else can solve being so humble, you might like her stories.

No, she wouldn't. Removing the tragedy would not remove the incompetence of Jessica. She's illiterate, has bad grades, knows nothing, will never be successful financially or in any type of employment. She only has her body and nothing more.

>Please keep in mind that neither Battler nor George nor Ange had any partner, so why does that make Jessica bad?
Battler is a playboy like his father, but because he's nihilistic, he doesn't care for that. Ange is in the same boat as Battler, but far more nihilistic. In the end, she still had a career as a writer. Jessica has nothing.

George is in the same boat as Jessica. He was unable to find someone to love him, so he resorted to loving a fucking maid girl. Not just using Shannon as a toy, but would've given up his family just for a worthless shit lacking a backbone.

The problem is of status. Kanon is a worthless shit, just like Shannon. Jessica was alone, hoping for love and would have accepted any man next to her and opened her legs for him. She would have gladly allowed herself to be used as a toy by a goddamn servant boy. That's pathetic. A slave would have mastery over the next head of the household! Over love!
What an absolute joke.

Kanon is a boring guy, seeking to find his humanity. A worthless endeavor for the next head of household of a rich family.

The only good trait about Jessica is her body, and if you do not think of her as anything else, you're being delusional.

I would add that she is not a backstabbing, potentially murdering person like most of the older Ushiromiyas.
Jessica never betrayed her fellow soldiers over gold, never threw a baby from a cliff, never fucked her own offspring and never killed anyone for the inheritance.
So at least she is a far more sympathetic human being than most members of that family.

Its amazing how the story gets way better when we have the detectives be side characters, going from reading Chimneys and cards on the table to a bunch of small stories of Poirot and his not-watson was like falling down the abyss of quality.

>insanely retarded solution
Shannon not being called Sayo in the red text was always a glaring loophole. The issue was just the retardedly convoluted way Ryukishi explained it as if Sayo could "kill" and switch between personalities at will for the sake of making red text, when the answer is more like "red text about Kanon and Shannon doesn't mean shit, because her real name is Sayo".

EP7 literally explained everything in it already. All the manga really did was turn the info already given into a compelling story and conclude the Battler x Sayo plotline properly instead of smearing obnoxious meta-Beato shit all over it to the very end. What was lacking in VN EP8 wasn't mystery solutions, but proper plot conclusions other than "just stop thinking and go to the golden land lol".

You do know ep 8 is no longer a proper mystery at that point?

Also to reference Van Dine #20:
>I herewith list a few of the devices which no self-respecting detective story writer will now avail himself of. They have been employed too often, and are familiar to all true lovers of literary crime. To use them is a confession of the author's ineptitude and lack of originality. (a) Determining the identity of the culprit by comparing the butt of a cigarette left at the scene of the crime with the brand smoked by a suspect. (b) The bogus spiritualistic se'ance to frighten the culprit into giving himself away. (c) Forged fingerprints. (d) The dummy-figure alibi. (e) The dog that does not bark and thereby reveals the fact that the intruder is familiar. (f)The final pinning of the crime on a twin, or a relative who looks exactly like the suspected, but innocent, person. (g) The hypodermic syringe and the knockout drops. (h) The commission of the murder in a locked room after the police have actually broken in. (i) The word association test for guilt. (j) The cipher, or code letter, which is eventually unraveled by the sleuth.
the "a" has been done in ep 3.

The meta world is actually purgatory, atleast this is hinted at through all songs with lyrics and through the game as well, character names also suggests this. The story also tells us this, because this where dead people reside but cannot move on yet before Battler has solved the mystery and saved Anges future.
In this purgatory the imaginary people are seen as living, so they can exist while not existing while being dead.

Van Dine rules would be impossible to follow for Umineko. You have:
-A rule for having only one culprit
-A rule for the murder not being an accident
-A rule for the murder not being a suicide

If everybody is dead, and there's only one culprit, and that culprit couldn't kill himself on purpose (suicide) or by accident, neither killed by another person (because that person would be another culprit), it follows that a story where everybody dies can't really 100% follow Van Dine.

Maybe there's a way to do it, messing with the definition of "culprit", but it doesn't seem to be the case for Umineko.
>>
>>157250566
No, the ps3 sprites in general aside from some like the adults looked like generic "anime art" and changed some characters completely, erasing some classic and effective facial expressions. CGs like Maria's EP1 face tried too hard to be "creepy" and ended up looking like generic edgy anime girl faces. While the voices are good, they mitigated the atomospheres and creepiness of scenes like Shannon's BSOD in EP7 where silence was more effective. The original sprites don't look bad. They aren't terrible like some of Higurashi's originals, and along with the original backgrounds added a unique look to the vn. The special effects really aren't that different or remarkably more interesting. The blurred and out of focus original backgrounds added a more mysterious and surreal atmosphere to me. Plus, the perspective errors were not nearly as recognizable as with the ps3 backgrounds.

The point is, a lot of times, human beings can't access the 100% real truth, almost every truth is subjective (even if it's something you witnessed, you're seeing it through your prejudices, even if it's something you yourself did, memories aren't 100% trustworthy). So, at some level, all truths are a question of faith, and yes, that means something you know for sure to be a lie can become the truth.

Using the PS3 patch for the second read is in no way close to reading for the first time with enhanced assets. Of fucking course the second time won't be as enjoyable, you already know what is going to happen.

People who have read it with PS3 patch FIRST and then with the originals a second time would have exactly the oposite opinion to yours, and would say the VN is boring wth no voices, characters lose all their personality and their sprites look goofy as fuck and break the immersion.
>>
>>157250838
And you won't find me bitching about that and trying to convince noobs to avoid online discussion at all costs.
>>
>>157250048

Only those who have love can truly appreciate the old sprites.

Honestly, no one says they're actually better with a straight face, but they have an undeniable charm, the reaction faces were perfect, one gets attached to them.

>People who have read it with PS3 patch FIRST and then with the originals a second time would have exactly the oposite opinion to yours,

You're exactly right on this anon. I played PS3 version first and that's exactly my opinion. How the original could ever compare to the PS3 version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfNaaqm8xPU&t=66s
>>
>>157251426
I would say that the originals are better in that they are more expressive and capture the author's intention the best. On a technical level the PS3 ones are definitely better with much better anatomy, shading, and resolution.

So a bunch of dudes with lots of manpower doing secret experiments covered up by government is a totally fine explanation. The only thing as stupid in Umineko was the whole sub of gold which was irrelevant besides telling us how they got so many explosives.
>And there was no magic diseases. Parasites that affect the host's mind EXIST. So at best, it's sci fi.
And effect is nowhere near comparable to what was happening there. Low sci high fiction is mostly just fiction and equivalent of magic. It's just pulling some disease that does precisely what the author wants to do out of its ass.

That happens in real life. It's not so unrealistic, especially as they mentioned the important it had in the last war Japan thought

>And effect is nowhere near comparable to what was happening there. Low sci high fiction is mostly just fiction and equivalent of magic. It's just pulling some disease that does precisely what the author wants to do out of its ass.
Makes people go crazy. That's not out of anyone's ass. Physical trauma to the brain immediately explains the effects you see.

None of these are remotely asspulls or stretches of your imagination.

We can be more objective about what constitutes asspulls though. If something can realistically happen, it's not really an asspull.

Can a servant do double shifts, pretending to be two separate characters PERFECTLY, without anyone finding out and eventually breaking a code to find hidden gold?
>>
>>157257380
>That happens in real life. It's not so unrealistic, especially as they mentioned the important it had in the last war Japan thought
Random meteorite striking some area happens in real life also. Now imagine if the solution to Umineko was the explosives randomly discharging and blowing everything up because grandpa Kinzo thought living on literal metric tons of TNT is a good idea.
>Makes people go crazy. That's not out of anyone's ass. Physical trauma to the brain immediately explains the effects you see.
Randomly pulling a parasite no normal doctors manage to diagnose and is unknown to everyone else because of conspiracies is an asspull plain and simple. It's not ok just because if you exaggerate some other parasite a lot and make a ton more of tweaks to it it's kinda like that.
>>
>>157257522
Yes, considering the story explains the multitude of servants on duty at different times, Genji and Kumasawa's help with arrangements, and the entire process of the epitaph's solution with the aid of Genji.

And their loyalty is 100% just because "muh servants?". I won't call it an asspull but man, it is unsatisfying. So was Battler not being the one to solve the mysteries for the readers/audience. I get that they wanted Battler to become a sorcerer but they should have had that happen later.

>This is going to blow your mind but doctors can't diagnose a shit ton of MEDICAL diseases, let alone psychological ones. Not really surprised.
So no doctor supposedly diagnosed that someone might have a parasite whose symptoms are supposedly similar to already known stuff? And keep in mind it's an entire village and every who ever lived in there.
>Because the medical community wouldn't accept it. The old man HAD the info and the evidence but they refused to listen. Shit happens alot in sciene (Galileo, Copernicus, etc). No conspiracy there.
Science as it stands didn't exist during Galieo and Copernicus. They weren't stopped by scientific authorities, and why would they stop someone who supposedly had actual samples of a new parasite that was behaving in supposedly realistic way.
>Toxoplasmosis: makes mice hunt down cats so the cats will eat them. vs Higurashi's parasite: Makes people get paranoid and violent. Not an unheard of thing with brain trauma.
Problem is: toxoplasmosis doesn't cause nearly big enough effects on humans. It's the favorite parasite of pseudo science stories and sci fiction but doesn't work exactly like that in real life so you see maggots pouring out of your vessels.

Oh. No, I don't think so. We get hints about other things, like Keiichi really IS insane in chapter 1 and his friends are not trying to hurt him
>Rena; "I don't want Keiichi to leave! I failed Satoshi but I won't fail you"
For a first time reader, you totally think she's crazy but in hindsight, you instantly know that this is hints that Keiichi is the one messed up, not Rena.

There's some offhand comments Keiichi makes about the photographer not really being a photographer. That's about it.

I don't think there's any serious foreshadowing about the specific solution, just hints about the solution that "someone is made insane" with ample proof: no needle, previous cases, misinterpreting quotes.
For secret government organization, maybe the van trying to run Keiichi off the road in episode 1? Or Shion finding out it's not the family in episode 5?

>For secret government organization, maybe the van trying to run Keiichi off the road in episode 1? Or Shion finding out it's not the family in episode 5?

Really grasping at straws here. The solution to Higurashi (in my opinion, the most important part of the plot and the reason most people begin/keep reading) is a complete asspull that comes completely out of left field with little to no foreshadowing.

Call Umineko's ending/solution shit if you will, but the game gives you ample information and hints to reach the conclusion yourself, without actually spelling it out for you in the most obvious terms.

How many people actually guessed Higurashi's solution while it was going on? Can't really imagine anyone getting it right.

>Science as it stands didn't exist during Galieo and Copernicus.
Here's a modern day version: Child psychologist (woman I believe) realized that victims of child sexual abuse didn't really react negatively to it until someone told them that it should be traumatizing. Sort of makes sense: if you don't KNOW it's bad or abnormal, you don't really treat it as such. Despite all her evidence, people refused to listen to it and she was discredited, etc.

Nigga, this is beyond insane at this point. You're picking at things that are totally acceptable in the realm of 'stretching your belief'. None of this shit REALLY is that hard to swallow.
>The secret to Higurashi is a disease that drives people mad
That is 100% an okay solution. It's not a curse, it's not magic. There is some actual scientific background that could explain it and the rest is some sci fi.

VERSUS: Umineko with CANONLY EXISTING WITCHES, who rewrite the plot on whims. "Oh, I killed Lambdelta. Eh, I changed my mind, she's back".

The solution is: there is no village conspiracy, the MC is a sufferer of paranoia.
There is evidence. Lots of it (some of which I listed).

The specifics: it's a parasite. Can't be guessed, no. You'd probably guess correctly that it's medical but to say it's a parasite is just a guess. IF you had medical knowledge, you might guess it's a parasite based on known parasites.

Tunguska event for example. Try to find how some people died while having fun in Russia and the solution is "Meteorite exploded above their heads it's totally like Tunguska Event but with casualties so it's alright".
>That is 100% an okay solution. It's not a curse, it's not magic. There is some actual scientific background that could explain it and the rest is some sci fi.
That's equivalent of magic. Scientific background involves teleportation and lots of stupid shit. There is also a big conspiracy in there with a private army. What's the difference between an actual curse driving people mad and a parasite that was never ever fucking diagnosed? And your example with psychologist is even worse because a) singular papers in soft sciences don't make facts
b) not finding out about a disease that has a fair number of people infected and big symptoms doesn't make sense if your entire explanation is that it could somehow be linked to an old historic event which causes jackshit since it's not a proof and the Japanese government can't allow that.
>VERSUS: Umineko with CANONLY EXISTING WITCHES, who rewrite the plot on whims. "Oh, I killed Lambdelta. Eh, I changed my mind, she's back".
Might as well say Higurashi has canon parallel world travelers and a goddess.

Protip: Witches don't need necessarily need to exist in Umineko. It's clear enough that they are playing games only related to the Rokkenjima incident that don't affect the real world.
>like no one wanted to believe in a mind altering parasite (MUCH LIKE YOU, YOURSELF IS DOING NOW).

Damn, proof your post isn't right.

I don't follow. Do you think people going crazy because of a disease or a parasite is impossible?

Do you think it could be hard to diagnose something?

Recall: MOST of the village is asymptomatic. Many sufferers of parasites like sleeping sickness or rabies or lyme disease can be totally asymphtomatic. Serological tests are no guareenteed to find it.
You might have to stretch that doing autopsies on dead sufferers would make finding the parasite impossible or difficult but it's a plot device to explain why no one believes in the disease yet. At worst, THIS is an asspull, albeit a minor one.

>Might as well say Higurashi has canon parallel world travelers and a goddess.
I already said those are weak points but 1. The goddess doesn't do anything. 2. Parallel universes plays a part in the true ending only (If I recall, ONLY Rika remembers anything in Episode 8 and even SHE finds out far far later). Still, you can call it an asspull

No one 'talks' about it but it's great.
It starts off slow, very slow, and none of the introduced characters have chemistry Ryukishi is known for. You read a bit and you start to wonder why you're even reading. But once the first mini boss is defeated and the first true villain shows up, it gets good.
Rose Guns Days is absolutely worth reading for the villains. They're all top tier. And the keikaku shenanigans is hilarious and great.
Season 3 is up there with Higurashi ep 6 and Umineko ep 5 in terms of greatness.

The ending is rushed and you can feel it because Ryukishi got the dreaded cold for a month. It's disappointing, but the ride is still worth it.

>I don't follow. Do you think people going crazy because of a disease or a parasite is impossible?
It's possible, but in the given context it's floating near the levels of people accidentally putting small bombs in food.

Solution to Higurashi is assume parasite X that is way more powerful than real parasites and assume organization Y covering it all up. While you can suspend your disbelief, when dealing with mysteries suspension of disbelief isn't something you should be doing too often. Umineko was simply a good bit better in that regard with less retarded shit happening and the retarded shit affecting story less. There is a difference between a whole organization on hiding a dangerous parasite from the world and the entire village and a group of people on hiding a shameful family problem.
