Like I mentioned earlier, I started watching HxH in general just few months ago, checked ep1 of both 99 and 11 versions to see which I'd like more, and naturally went with 1999 original. And am I glad I did, as 2011 skips fucktons of good, important stuff, and its animation & art style are just lazy as hell. I fucking loved Yorkshin City arc in 1999, but I couldn't stomach it at all in 2011.

Best way to tackle the entirity of HxH anime adaptations is to start with 1999 and finish it & its OVAs, then start 2011 version from around episode 80 so you get straight to the Chimera Ant arc.

Like said above, the 2011 skips & speeds through the first few arcs like crazy, probably because the creators thought that people would have seen those part already a decade earlier anyway, so you're not really getting the optimal experience if you only watch the 2011 version.

Yeah, the cast's great, but with 2011 version alone, Leorion will certainly only come across as a greedy, moronic comedy relief, and Kurapika a bit edgy blonde boy.

Kurapika didn't even have a real backstory until Togashi released that one shot before the first movie. Leorio has been left unexplored in the manga. The new anime showed everything about Killua that the anime had. Gon is simple as hell.

I just started watching the 2011 version and got to episode 10.
In this episode the characters keep making insanely stupid discussions where it feels like writer is purposely making the characters act retarded and making them do the worst decision they can for the sake of drama.
Is this any different in the manga or the 99 anime? I've heard the beginning of HxH is supposed to make you think its like other garbage shonen manga, is this just on purpose?

Because if it was '11 adaptation, I totally get you. I ended up skipping forward all the time in that shit. The 1999 version did everything it managed to adapt WAY better.

I did enjoy the tower arc quite a bit in 99 version, and the arc that follows (Yorkshin) is easily one of the series' highlights. However, said arc is totally butchered IMO in the 2011 version, so avoid it at all costs.

1999 does excellent job at ADAPTING the HxH's story and mood into moving media format, which does justify and even require minor changes to work.

Walls of infographic text are OK in manga, because the flow of time between frames is less clear yet easier to interpret as only taking mere seconds. However, in moving pictures, the good old "show, don't tell" is still a legit, great rule of thumb, which 1999-2001 adaptation embraces brilliantly. It introduces the characters and the world with visual clues, subtle movements, camera-angles, color palette, and even blatant as fuck symbolism. That's a stark contrast to 2011's all-knowing narrator who loves to pop up every few seconds to explain what you have just seen, no matter how obvious it all should be.

Again, you seem to be fixated on the thought that those details would be "needless details". I fail to see how any of the scenes you mentioned also would "blur" anything; in fact I see it to be the total opposite.

But let's start breaking these minor details a part:

It's been a few weeks since I saw this scene in the 2011 version, and a few months since the 1999's version, so I apologize if I'm mixing things here, but I was pretty sure he did just that in the '11 version as well.

Even if he did not, it's very easy to understand why he would be doing those: The goal of the competition is to make the opponent admit defeat, without killing him. You can inflict insane amounts of pain and damage to a person without actually killing him, yet you'd totally ruin their quality of life for good, resulting what many would consider a fate worse than death.

In case targeting the spine and ears was indeed not included in the 2011 version, then it's obvious that the makers of 1999 version simply wanted to further underline the stone cold resolve of Hanzo, and the brutality of the HxH's world and Hunters' job in general. In this case, Hanzo is one of the stronger initial candidates, and already a fine specimen of the diversity of Hunters.

I'm surprised you actually have an issue with such a minor, comedic scene at all. While obviously such scenes work as "breathers" between all the action and drama, this scene again does indeed work as a foreshadowing character introduction: Hisoka is fucking sexy, lewd motherfucker, with more than few screws loose in his head, and in general does not really care for normie standards or etiquette. It's sort of early warning for the bathing scenes in the Sky Arena tower and in Greed Island.

The scene with Tonpa and Hisoka does nothing because it fails on multiple levels. It has Tonpa and Hisoka directly interact which isn't something the rest of the exam reflects, and the underlying premise destroys the comedy that already existed with Kurapika and Leorio ignoring Tonpa and falling asleep anyways.

The way Hisoka works during the exam is that they introduce him as sparingly as possible. Most of his actions, like punching Leorio are extremely brief and exaggerated. The more of him you show (chasing after the crowd in the fog, sulking after having his sushi rejected,) the less threatening he is.

Hisoka is a sadist looking for "fun" in the form of eliminating strong opponents, totally disregarding human life. He also clearly gets kicks out of teasing himself by restricting his urges, and by playing the wild card with everyone.

Tonpa is just a Shinobi. He does whatever he must to achieve his goals, which in Exam's case was to beat his competition. Gon's childish stubbornness combined with the fight's special rules just resulted him to go all out in the almost inhumane way. Again, I don't see there being a big difference between 1999 and 2011 versions in this fight's case, but I find 99 to nail the atmoshere buildup & methods to be many steps above the 11's counterpart.

I'm still a bit puzzled why such minor scenes are the ones that pop up in this discussion, when you could've mentioned something major like the whole part with the boat. Then again you'd be hard-pressed to find people who did not enjoy those episodes; superb visuals, interesting concept, and some new yet very welcome character building. Without it, characters like the sniper chick or the Gon's hunter guy would be literal no-names you really don't care for at all, but the boat challenge turns them into people with names and personalities, into characters, which is why their demises and the Hisoka's & Illu's brutality hit even harder later on.

Never felt like that at all. In fact, the subtle foreshadowing created with visuals and the guy just playing cards as if to channel his inner bloodlust away from the competitors were brilliant ways to build up tension around the character. When real fights then finally happen, you understand the main cast's unease and fears.
