The girl lived a shit and had a egg, hoping something cool would hatch (metaphor for hope) and this guy kinda knew that she was wasting her time, probably because he saw all that water bottles and thought no egg would take as long to hatch as it took the girl to collect all of those, so he smashed the egg, showing her the painful truth.
At the end the girl is shown to grow older, so it's basically just a metaphor for painful realizations that destroy you naiv believes, so you can grow as a person.
It's not common for movies to have more metaphoric then actual plot, but it's actually pretty straight forward compared to other stuff that hides this in subtext.
