ABL limiter for OLEDs only kick in if you go above 35 ft/L (or 120 cd/m^2), and that is already plenty bright.

Which version of the blu ray should I buy? I'm always indecisive on the bonuses from the different retailers.

So is it an upscale or not? Went and preordered the collectors edition, would be great if it was native. Also, are they going to be using funi's subs as-is, typo's, lack of type-setting, and aliased out-the-ass fonts and all? 4K is double the pixels for triple the price and it's damn near indistinguishable from "2K"

Why does everyone think tragedy is somehow innately deeper? Some of the most thoughtful movies and books ever made, things like Wild Strawberries and Ulysses and the Aneid - they all have happy endings. Sadness not any more indicative of depth than the most saccharine shit imaginable, yet somehow there's this attitude that suffering makes a story wiser. And that's just edgy bullcrap.

To label KNNW as a generic YA story is to ignore layers and layers of subtext, and even the liminal. This is probably Shinkai's most personal film in 10 years, and it's a direct rejection of the 5cm/s philosophy. The Earthquake bits have been discussed to hell and back, but the fact is that Shinkai wholeheartedly believes that his old attitude was wrong. And this new philosophy pervades all of the movie. From the visual design, the direction, and even the music (even if it was pretty dumb j-pop), every piece fits together to push an idea forward. Not like Kotonoha, or Kodomo.

And plenty has to be said for how visually stunning it is. I mean, Shinkai is a fantastic director and editor, but a terrible, terrible animator. I always thought that despite people praising 5cm/s, it still looked like garbage. Individual frames look nice but the characters aren't emotive. They look like robots half the time. Bringing on Ando and Tanaka let Shinkai focus on the cinematography, while the AD's handled the details of emotion. That Mitsuha crying scene would have been impossible in any older Shinkai film.

And add on top of that impressive visual continuity and powerful theming, and you've got the best Shinkai film ever. Even if you think 5cm/s is more realistic or resonant to a certain lifestyle, there's no denying that KNNW is better produced, better written, and conveys a more original message, and more skillfully too.

I'd rank this up there with my top Anime films of all time, with Omoide Poroporo, Honey Mayo, and Patlabor 2. Miyazaki wishes he could make something as good.
