It was basically two action sequences that bookended Shinji meandering around, playing piano, and crying, which was the vast majority of the movie. I don't even know if I would count the Wunder sequence as a "battle", because it lasts all of 30 seconds.

That's a nice theory but this dude makes some HUGE logical leaps. Just because Rei is more likable in 2.0 doesn't mean it's because Anno hated people seeing her that way. I think it's much more likely it's supposed to fall in line with the timeloop reset theory than a meta "the whole trilogy is about what anno is feeling".
