I think you have a really sad and pessimistic view of the series. Sure, it wouldnt be easy, but to say its outright impossible for her to love? Both the TV series and EoE end with slightly upbeat conclusions, as the characters face their problems and will try to improve, even if the road ahead is difficult to handle. It almost feels like one of those self help book. To say love is outright impossible goes against my view of it.

I never said she was. I brought it up to continue to debunk your claim that she only ever acted that way to Shinji.
She would have done the same thing with Toji, with any other boy that refused to crawl to her feet that lived in such close quarters with her.

Evangelion ends on a note of hope that people can choose to improve themselves, but it's not a change that happens overnight.
And in Asuka's case it would take years and years to heal, and even then it's not like all her problems and traumas would just disappear.

Your upbringing has an immense impact on you, one that does not easily go away. That's just reality and it reflects easily in Asuka's character.
She can not connect and relate to people in a healthy manner because of her childhood. She was shown a distorted version of love, and thus she can only give that distorted version of love. Since that's all she knows.

Of course that's just the present, people can always evolve and change. But we don't see past that scene on the beach so we'll never know for sure what awaits her in the future. And honestly it doesn't matter.
Because the EoE ending is to show that the possibility to change exists, it's an ending for you the viewer moreso than the characters.

Hey, /a/, haven't been around recently. I see there's a discussion about Asuka's motivations and her supposed attraction to Shinji and Kaji. While I believe that this question should be personal and you should think about it for yourself, I see it as my obligation to share this little doujinshi with you: http://imgur.com/a/8LLDn. It's written by Nobi Nobita, JUNE interviewer, a supposed prominent fujoshi and shoujo romance lover. Now, in this doujinshi, called "Bridal Veil", Nobi shares her vision on Asuka's perception of men around her. Her motives are written outright in the last panel. She wanted Kaji (particularly addressed in this panel) to "break the walls around her heart" and "embrace her". Now that would probably mean that she wanted Kaji to see her true self and accept that true self, she pretty much longs for true love. Now, her attraction to Kaji is pretty obvious. She calls for him in the moment of misery and sees him as a "worthy man". In other words, she sees him as a man who can love her and protect her. Now, as for Shinji, it's pretty complicated. The same was stated in The Essential Evangelion Chronicle. Her feelings for him are "complicated". In this doujinshi, however, we see a parallel between her interactions with Shinji and Kaji. Both result in a visual representation of AT field. That may mean that she also wanted Shinji to embrace her the same way, since AT field is a symbol for these "walls around our hearts". Moreover, when she thinks about Shinji making moves towards her, she doesn't seem so repulsive about it. May that mean that she's kind of attracted to him? That she sees his true self and believes he may understand her? Why is this so important? This doujinshi inspired Anno to add these scenes in Death & Rebirth and DC cuts of episodes 21-24. He also stated that Nobi understood Asuka even better than him and managed to represent that understanding in her doujin. Still, decide for yourself, I can't yet. 1st and last post ITT. Heil Anno

His reactions to her advances these two times confirmed it for her.

I don't care about shipping, but just to correct you in something, Annoposter: the book you mention has a difference between volumes, side A and side B. For the first volume and therefore the first episodes the feelings Asuka has towards Shinji are described as 'competitive/interest' and he feels 'complicated feelings' towards her. In the second volume the feelings Asuka has for Shinji are labeled as 'love/hate' while Shinji's remain as 'complicated' just like before.
Looking at the rest of the chart the feelings Shinji has for Gendo are also labeled as 'love/hate' though so you guys can take Asuka's as whatever you want. I don't care if her feelings were romantic love or not. She also hates him and to be fair I don't think it changes much.

Yeah, I sorta noticed that as well. Gendo's feelings towards Shinji aren't as bad and indifferent as that chart makes it out to be as we learnt in EoE. Ritsuko's jealousy towards Rei because of Gendo's attention is pretty clear too so it shouldn't have to have a quotation mark, there's just no doubt about it. Those are just few examples if I recall correctly. I guess that's what happens when you have to summarize relationships that are like those shown in Eva. You just can't put it into a few words.
To be fair I'd like to read more about Asuka/Shinji's relationship in general, and I mean stuff made by Gainax, as it's an interesting part of Eva, but it doesn't seem like there's much written about them in those books. This is one of the few ones I've seen, and I believe if there were more they'd be translated/scanlated by now.

Many times real love dont have a really grounded "THIS is what i love in you". Some times the personality of another person just "clicks" with you.
She is seen very attracted to shinji sometimes, which may be just related to her pride / her desire to be adult / lust, or can be a real feeling about him.

She also clearly has some kind of jealousy about shinji somehow being more successful as a pilot than her. Even though it is an unhealthy basis to start a relationship with someone else, its a very real occurrence.

The point is, asuka is an unhealthy person, and her loves and relationships will be unhealthy by extension. Expecting her to show your idealized normal version of love is too much, as she shows attraction in very weird and fucked up ways.

When you love someone, there is a part of them you love, however shallow it may be. But we see no indication there could be any of that she sees in him.
She doesn't even find him attractive, she calls him plain in the first episode she meets him.
There's just nothing.

She has jealousy towards Misato and Rei as well, that doesn't equal love either.

Yes, an example of that would be her infatuation with Kaji. Expecting her relationship with Shinji to be love just because he is a boy is equally idealizing her character and ignoring what we're shown in the story.
