Don't forget about adjusting the tracking.

But even with all that, watching subs underground back then was somehow more satisfying than how mainstream torrenting or using YouTube or Crunchyroll is now.

Laserdiscs were also GOAT. I was a teenager by the 90s and had a pretty extensive film and anime collection on LD. I still miss the fuck out of that format.

Nothing greater than anime with shitty compressed composite NTSC video at 480i and "Hi-Fi" audio that would distort the pitch depending on the temperature/relative humidity that day.

>>
>>156983516
>watching subs underground back then was somehow more satisfying than how mainstream torrenting or using YouTube or Crunchyroll is now.
That's because it was far more communal back then. I swapped fansubbed VHS anime in college and rented VHS dubs of Ranma 1/2 in Los Angeles Koreatown videostores in the early 90s. Even the guys who didn't understand the funny dubbing still loved it, it was very much something you gathered around with friends.

I remember getting miss-mailed a sneak peak VHS for pokemon when I was about 8. I can't remember if I later recorded Inuyasha onto VHS or DVD. I more fondly remember the first time I torrented. Yes. I remember paying some Japanese exchange student for Bubblegum Crisis and the Tenchi Muyo OVAs. The AV club pretty much was dedicated to making cash on the side subbing anime on to VHS by the time I graduated high school. Hastings used to also have really cheap VHS and Laserdisk imports of anime during the 90's.
>>
>>156983253
1993 too. I had internet so i quickly found out what anime was and couldnt get enough and scoured the local videostores, movie channels that played anime movies, and anywhere to get it. Great times, weren't they? I remember my college anime "club" sharing old episodes of Conan, Bubblegum Crisis when it was brand spanking new, and even girls contributing with Candy Candy.

My mom watched and read Candy Candy when she was younger and got me and my younger sister hooked on Japanese anime and manga as children. When she had cancer a few years back my sis and I took turns watching old episodes of it on DVD when she was recovering in the hospital.

My kids are too young to watch stuff I like and frequently prefer watching Teen Titan Go and Spongebob.

>Remember fansubbed anime on vhs?
Those were the good old days when there were dedicated fans. Some people were happy to give back to the anime hobby and spent their own money to buy laserdiscs and subtitling gear to make free fansubs. The subs were put on SVHS and distributed to various other clubs and groups that would then make lots of VHS copies from those. A big thank you to Phoenix Japanimation Society, Tom's Cat House, and the Northwest Anime Society for all the free high quality distro tapes. The ones they sent out were typically directly subbed from laserdisc onto that tape so it really was a secondary master.

1988 here and I member.
I would prefer not to member VHS players acting up and having to open them up, pray that the tape isn't too fucked up and if it isn't reposition it all by yourself.
Fansubbed VHS were great stuff, but I honestly don't miss them, much like I don't miss the pseudo Shonen Jump expies that were published here in Italy back in the 90's.

I do kind of miss those catalogues and small magazines for Mail Orders, which during my time were almost always aimed at metalheads but also had stuff like fansubbed anime, imported(read pirated) videogames, various weed related stuff like bongs, action figures and so on, now that there's internet they're completely gone.
>>
>>156979058
No, I remember watching the Pokemon and Digimon movies in VHS thought.
>>
>>156979058
Sometime around 1998 I managed to acquire a fansubbed VHS of Omohide Poro Poro. This was convenient because it's official English release wouldn't be until eighteen years later.
>>
The thing I miss most about anime fandom in the 90s was the type of person it drew and how limited technology shaped the fandom. Anime otaku in the 80s and 90s were less moefags and were a more sci-fi oriented bunch with jobs in technical fields. Anime, believe it or not, used to be seen a high-brow and more acceptable hobby back in the 20th century because anime back then tended to be more classic genre oriented such as action flicks, sci-fi, horror, romcom, etc. It was always some amazingly animated OVA or cool fantasy TV series rather than K-ON or Kobayashi. That was back when you could invite normies to watch anime with you and they would think it was cool.
>>
It's nothing worth remembering
>>
My first real dive into the weeb zone was buying DVDs of shows that were on toonami, which I stopped when I finally got high speed internet and downloaded everything. The first thing I torrented was gundam seed destiny, so that's like 6 years of being a buyfag.
