Actually it started out as a what a wonderful life esque character drama with supernatural elements.
This series takes plot twists to a genre level. It's so fucking stupid.

What are you talking about OP? Yusuke Urameshi's like the perfect shonen protagonist. He doesn't exhibit any of the typical shonen bullshit like being gifted by genetics or destiny--

Nothing is YYH is legit outside of nostalgia.
It's easily the worst written shounen i have ever seen.
It was probably average or better for it's time but it's a retarded mess by today's standards

it's just not super memorable
because the first 2 arcs are just fight after fight. it's fighting manga at it's finest since it only cares about having fights
then the 3rd arc seems like it's trying to evolve beyond it's original premise and become something deeper not unlike Rurouni Kenshin's Kyoto arc. Except it just jumps the shark in the end and says fuck it to what it was trying to layout

The tone shifts about as smoothly as a bag full of bowling balls about 12 times in the series.
I know writing chapter to chapter was fairly common back in those days but YYH didn't even seem to care about being consistent from arc to arc and only sort of cared for consistency within an arc.
Powers and backstories get ass pulled and retconned like 3 times each for every main character, entire sets of powers and rules will pop up for a few chapters then disappear forever and every moment of it may be the most generic shounen dialogue and presentation that can possibly exist.
At points it sounds like a parody of anime it's so bad.

YYH does a lot of things right
Remembering to keep fights consistent in a Shonen, giving motive to characters, how to do tension when it was being done
but yeah it fucks up with consistency

It was always one of those poorly written series but with likable characters and good action. When a bunch of weak nobodies on their flying castle tried to take over the world was the point it devolved into 1v1 fights where Hiei and Kurapika 1-shot their opponents, Kuwabara has some comical fight, Yusuke has a fist fight with the main bad guy and Genkai does nothing every arc. From then on it was all the same while having a mildly interesting plot that would ultimately become pointless by the next arc save for giving the main characters a massive power-up.

At least he's fun to play in Jump Ultimate Stars

This was a Shonen that ended with the characters outgrowing the Genre and moving on with their lives
