Kira's actually a pretty shit villain. I understand why people like the guy, and I think what Araki was sort of trying to do with his character was pretty interesting, but Araki never went anywhere with him.

Kira's supposed to have characterization to make him feel more human, make him feel like he's not just a character that's totally evil and has no truly redeeming characteristics about himself like Kars does; a character that may do some bad things but overall is human like me and you.

He just doesn't do that well enough though. I don't sympathize with Kira because he's not a character I can sympathize with. He's mentally ill, and he's enabled. His parents should have taken him to a therapist or something but they actively helped him do all the things he does. The argument of "yeah but he's just trying to live a quiet life with his hobbies like me or you" doesn't mean anything because the only reason he is a serial killer is because he was allowed to become one with no repercussions. Kira would have been a lot more likable if say his parents tried to stop him and Kira ended up killing them, and from then on he lived alone succumbing to his murderous tendencies.

The other problem with Kira is that he doesn't do enough to justify me wanting to see him defeated. Yeah, I know that Kira has killed more then a dozen people; but I don't really care about that, I don't know those people. In terms of abhorrent behavior, Kira gives everyone peaceful deaths(except for poor Reimi and Arnold who had to suffer from Kira's lack of Killer Queen.) He kills Aya(which I'm pretty sure the only fuck anyone ever gave about her is that they would fuck her.) and Shigechi(who wasn't given enough time on screen for his death to have a big impact.) Only reason I would ever want Josuke to DORADORADORA his ass into next Tuesday is because Kira's just annoying, I don't hate him that much as a person.

There was potential, but it wasn't realized.

As someone struggles with similar inner conflicts, it was completely his fault. He could have put in effort to master himself and control -> sublimate the urges, but he didn't, he just caved in repeatedly.
