They only got the chance to exist because the Japanese economy was good enough for studios to take risks. The 2008 recession changed that.

Most of them are pretty boring, and it's not a question of understanding them or not.
Ergo Proxy had a pretty interesting plot and world building, but the story is told so badly that people usually dismiss it with scorn.

You're at work, getting yelled at by your boss for not following directions to a T.

You get yelled at after lunch because you were 2 minutes tardy to your cubicle.

You're have to stay at the office until 2AM, but only get paid for 3 hours worth of overtime for that day because excessive overtime is illegal.

You get home dead tired at 3 AM, eat your ramen, and you turn on the TV. At this point would you want to fray your soul even further by watching something deep and emotional or would you rather reminisce about your middle school days by watching a TV show about middle school girls doing cute middle school things?
