Maybe it's kind of like Xenogears where an ancient technological calamity created the abyss and in it's core resides the vessel of god. I saw him in a villain thread and tried reverse image searching and only got me to some chink blog but one of the many manga he mentioned was Made in Abyss. I was never sure if it came from it or not considering the art seemed completely different than the short main characters so I was never sure.
