Umm no.

Hard drive failure rates spikes depend on few key things. Its not storage space.

The main problem with HDD failure with the past few years was the flood affected drives being sold to public. This screwed lot of the large HDD up. That was 6 years ago, so the myth needs to stay dead.

The real problem is some companies are pure shit. Seagate and Western Digital/WDC are selling consumer grade HDD with high failure rate. HGST is the most reliable and Toshiba follows second. Seagate/WDC are 3-5X more likely to die than the HGST ones. Thats year-to year basis.

This guy does HDD failure rate stats every quarter, every year for the last few years. Its been extremely useful in determining quality and factual information on HDD stats.

>even if the source was below 720p
this is why ab is shit, you either waste hdd space or fuck your ratio.

Not to mention if you download 1 epsiode out of a huge pack that has almost zero seeds you have to seed it a ridiculous amount. I got fucked over for downloading 1 episode of One Piece and a couple eps of naruto. Their H&R system is fucking horrible. Despite making a few releases of my own for AB i got banned for not wanting to seed a couple episodes in massive packs (ratio was over 7.0)

>>156692854
Nice.
>>
I'm pretty well covered for the moment I hope, recently deleted a few ones I'd seen but they were all pretty popular stuff that won't be lost to time.
>>
>>156693051
Absolutely yes. Spend a couple hundred dollars on a good NAS and buy new harddrives when needed, expanding storage when you fill up. MUCH MUCH easier than installing a dozen HDDs on your computer.

Plus it makes it much easier to stream to other devices in your home, seed your torrents, etc...
>>
>>156680929
I'm just glad i had an account on ab WAY before Nyaa was taken down.
>>
>>156693157
any suggestions for one?
>>
>>156693157
Not him, but are there any alternatives to NAS that do not require network sharing?

If not, how does security and access to NAS work? Do I need to download files to access them or is there some sort of virtual drive at play? What are the security constraints like and is it possible for the NAS to be accessible outside local network?
>>
>>156693246
It really depends on what you want to do, how many drive slots you want, if there's any particular software you want it to come with. I'd just play around on newegg and figure out what features you want, BUT I would buy the drives separately unless you get a really good deal.

>>
>>156693157
>Couple of hundred dollars
This is why I don't have NAS , I'd rather buy a new hardware/additional HD when It does the same job of archiving.
>Buy a new drive
>Copy the thing
>Bury it on some bunker
Simple.
>>
>>156693311
Yes, you don't need your NAS on the network to be accessed.

Depends on the NAS and the software you use. It depends on how you want to do it. Yes you can make it accessible over the internet but the security depends on how you want to do it. Many NAS support full drive encryption.

Part of why I'm being vague and unhelpful is because you can use Linux and do literally anything you want.
>>
>>156693432
I used to think that but now I have 7 external hard drives and it's a pain in the ass to keep them organized, especially moving them around as I travel. A single NAS would have been much much easier to handle than 14 TB of external hard drives.
>>

A 6 bay NAS is already set up for that many drives. If I was going to build my own from scratch I'd just get a RAID card with sufficient ports, but I'd rather have a prebuilt for portability anyway. I actually considered getting a rack server but I'm not that /g/ yet.
>>
>>156694312

The larger JoJo versions seem to be pretty popular and are freeleech.

Likewise all the Ghibli movies. I tend to get a GB or so a night competing with all the seedboxes.
>>
>>156694319
How much total storage do you want? Even with 6TB drives (which I wouldn't trust) and not cloning your drives, that's only 12TB nominal storage. I have enough data already that I'm looking in the 16-24TB range so I can also backup the more rare files as needed.

I also try to think more long term. I'd rather the NAS cost a bit more now and still be usable 5-7 years down the road. 4k anime is coming.

It's very cheap, you don't even need special hardware for things like unRAID or ZFS etc, you can use any HDD with just about any onboard/card controller (you could even throw USB drives in there if you wanted to)

>>156702761
I posted my 30TB array a few replies back, my other array is 15TB, both are parity protected and on a UPS, so I won't lose data if I lose a drive. Important stuff is backed up internally and externally.

It isn't that expensive to setup and run, especially if you add only a few drives to start with and add more as you need them.

Drives are still coming down in price after that big shock of the floods years ago. It's a bit of a pain if you run a bunch of small drives though, space can become a premium pretty quick.

I originally had the 15TB array, that started off as 3x 3TB WD RED drives (one drive used for parity) to give me 6TB. I added to that over time to give me the arrays I have now. I sort of future proofed it.

At the time, if I remember correctly, 3TB drives were $240AUD+. Those drives are now $170AUD... We still get fucked over for prices on anything down here in Australia.

Depends on the level of redundancy you want.

For RAID5, you take away one drives worth

eg, 4x 4TB = 12TB

RAID6 takes away two drives worth of space

eg. 4x 4TB = 8TB

Things like unRAID can work like RAID5 or 6 depending on how many parity drives you give it, but it doesn't stripe the data across all of the drives. So, if you had only one parity drive and you lost two drives, the other drives won't lose their data.

With a normal RAID5 for example, if two drives were lost, you'd lose every single piece of data. Hence why it's no longer recommended in business.

>fail proof
doesn't exist. Drives fail. Keep backups on optical media. Invest in a BR burner and burn backups to optical and keep in a spindle.

For a magnetic drive, I use a NAS with a RAID6 array and 6x2TB WD Red drives.

8+TB of storage, double fault tolerance.
>>
>>156703627
Blue does.

Im waiting till it reaches 8TB for me to start downloading and turn full autism and remove credit pages of everything.
>>
>>156703467
Not really, regardless of the drives you have in a RAID5, it'll always be one drives worth of capacity for parity (not dedicated parity, the parity is striped across all the array disks).

So, for RAID5
4x 4TB = 12TB
5x 4TB = 16TB
8x 4TB = 28TB
etc etc

The downfall is, you need all the drives to be the same size (you can have larger drives, but they'll lower to the size of the smallest drive)

That's for hardware RAID5 though, I don't recommend that at all to anyone.

>What is good level for home anime fan?
Depends what you want to store, DVD rips? BD rips? How long you want to keep it for? etc

Start with something in your price range.
If you go down the hardware RAID route, or other things like ZFS/unRAID, maybe 3x 3TB as a start? That'll give you 6TB.

It's difficult to suggest without knowing your usage and storage habits.

It's a cheap way to store things for a few years until you can afford a proper NAS with Raid6, which will run you about $1200-$1500.

A blu-ray burner and a spindle of discs will work for under $100 to back up a fair amount of stuff.

Tape is expensive as fuck to run, and keep in mind you need a reader/writer, a temperature and humidity controlled environment, plus the actual tape itself. Write speeds are very slow compared to even hard drives, so it only really works for archiving stuff. Write once, store in a controlled environment until you need it.

Also, expect an upfront cost of around $3k for the tape deck and some tapes to get started.

Hard drives these days generally fail within 5 years unless kept in an optimal environment.

You're so wrong. SSDs, and flash storage inherently for that matter, leak electrons when left unpowered. The time until data integrity is comprimised depends on three factors, being cell wear, operating (power on) temperature, and storage (power off temperature), with low power on temps + high power off temps being a worst case scenario. Flash storage is not for archival purposes, it's solely when IO is needed, like boot drive.

it's very simple, just leave your torrent client open, gain yen, use that to offset your ratio, seed the required time so it doesn't count as a h&r
>>
>>156686258
You don't understand, I had them active for over 6 months then go on a break for a few weeks and get H&Rs on many torrents that i only downloaded 1-2 eps from. This is with a high ratio of over 7.0 it is absolutely retarded you can't use bonus points to remove H&R or upload credit.

Does the bios detect it? If not, the circuit board is most likely busted. You can try to find another hdd of exactly the same type and swapping the board, but beyond that you need to rely on datarecovery companies which will charge you thousands.

Greens are bad because they're shit quality. Virtually every HDD I've had so far that has failed has been a WD Green, I don't buy them anymore, they really aren't designed for anything more than a drive you access every couple of weeks and barely ever touch.

Which is useless to me, I'd rather a little more for a better quality drive. If you're going to buy a drive for mass storage buy WD Reds, come with 3 year warranty if you register it with WD

>scrubbing

Long and short of it "Data scrubbing, also called data cleansing, is the process of amending or removing data in a database that is incorrect, incomplete, improperly formatted, or duplicated."

It's just error-checking and importantly correcting the little errors before they become overwhelming.

>How do so many people have computers that work fine if this stuff happens, does the os auto do it?

Until it goes belly up, their sole HDD dies and they lose all their data. A lot of people don't have much storage space either so these macro problems don't really affect them.

much less susceptible.
I've had 20 drives in the last 10 years. 4 drives (1 80gb drive, 1x1.5tb, 2x500gb) failed on me. Only one I managed to recover the data
I have around 600 DVD's, 200 of which are around 10 years old. I have noticed about two dozen of then showing sings of weathering (all of low quality brands, by the way, I don't even buy verbatin) and decided to salvage their contents into a new fresh copy. Only TWO DISCS had a smal partial data corrupted (the ones on the edge, Usually just a single episode out of 20) representing less than 0.1% of everything I have stored. I call that A LOT MORE RELIABLE.

Which is why you look at statistics of AVERAGE failure rates.

>>
>>156709857
>Is there any advantage over just building a pc and running freenas on it?
Unless you already have a rack to put it in, no.

Also enterprise grade gear are expensive as fuck new, run hot outside of a climate controlled rack environment and are LOUD.
If you buy used you can find decent prices but will probably run even hotter and louder with a higher potential for failures in old hardware.

Just go with a decent quality case with the most amount of drive bays you can find for a reasonable price.
>>
Since there's talk about harddrives, how would a WD Red work as a regular storage drive alongside windows on a ssd. It would have few games as well, but I'm worried about the speed.
>>
>>156710128
In general you will want a 7200rpm drive for anything that even remotely requires speed.
I hear the HGST NAS driver are very good both in performance and reliability and are similar in price to WD REDs.
>>
>>156710128
If it's just a storage drive where you store some backups and some few hundred gigabytes of animu or any similar function, reds work fine. Just make sure to have your frequently used programs and games installed in the SSD.
>>
>>156710262
Most of the hgst drives they sell here are 2,5" and the prices are little higher. Any idea what disadvantages it has over 3,5"?

>>156710487
I was planning on having few games on it, but I guess I could just buy a bigger ssd later.
>>
>>156710071
Thanks. I actually have a diy nas but it needs upgrading and was thinking about an actual server tray. I'll just go the upgrade route now.
>>
>>156710523
2.5 drives are slower and more expensive for their data.
>>
>>156710523
If you have an old as fuck case, it probably won't have mounting for 2.5" hard drives. There's also the fact that you can't really find anything larger than 2TB capacity. Other than that, they're completely identical.
>>
>>156710636
But they are more reliable, less power hungry and quieter.
I use a single 2.5 1tb drive for downloading and programs that don't need lot of throughput so my 4 3.5 raid array shuts down at night and when I'm web browsing and don't want to be annoyed by their noise.
>>
>>156710636
>>156710651
Yeah, I noticed they were more expensive, but if they are more reliable and potentially last longer it might be worth it to pay 10-20 euros more. I have many mounts as well on my R5. Still not sure at all though
>>
I just found an unused 4tb drive still in the original shrinkwrap under my bed. Anyone want it for cheap?
>>
>>156710723
>>156710773
They're not essentially "slower" since the greater data density from the smaller platters can, theoretically, compensate for the other short comings of a smaller power efficient hard drive.
>>
>>156710811
