Laius' party was known as one of the most successful groups on the island. Their members are some of the best and most qualified people in their fields, even the new editions.

Farlyn is some sort of super Cleric who has an affinity to dungeon ecology and spirits.

Marcille is a top graduate from the magical academy and weilder of ancient forbidden magic.

Chillchack is arguably the most industrious Halfling on the island.

Senshi is a super-hermit. Incredible fighter, fairly well connected within the dungeon, at least with the Orcs. And his backstory is still unknown.

Namari is the daughter of the former leader in arms peddling, and even with her family's checkered past, still hired by one of the leading scholar groups in the dungeon.

Samurai is some noble from a faraway land and not only a strong swordsman in his own right, but has an entourage of skilled ninjas and warriors.

And Lauis himself is the right kind of leader as well as capable fighter. Observation and adaption are among his specialties.

I think Gnomes are worse, but I won't disagree. That being said, being the only Halfling shown in the story to actually care for their group outside of profit is a big deal for him. The fact that he's also a skilled enough fighter to keep up with everyone else during the Dragon fight is a huge plus.
