>>
>>156614069
I don't really think it would hold up quite as well. Just because of the acting difficulties when you're trying to portray the bodyswapping, for one - in anime, if something doesn't look quite right, you can go back and erase that part so you eventually end up with a better picture. Whereas, in live action, you have to do a total retake, and can't fix individual things like that.

Plus, the kuchikamizake trip would look pretty shit with CGI, I think. That part's almost entirely dependent on it being a drawn medium.

So I noticed in the LN that Mitsuha remembers the お前は誰? in her notebook during the first bodyswap with Taki which means that it was probably after the first bodyswap we see with Taki in Mitsuha.

Unless their memories while bodyswapped are the memories they had at the year the other person was in, meaning while swapped Taki only had his junior high memories and Mitsuha had her memories up until death (suggesting that because when Mitsuha sees the double crater she remembers the comet impact).

Also, reading about Taki practicing speaking like Mitsuha was pretty amusing.
>>
>>156625416
One thing I noticed was that he used "atashi" in basically the second time he was swapped, when he kicked over the desk. Did he go through a similar "watashi? watakushi? boku? ore?" scene with Mitsuha's friends?
>>
>>156625606
Probably.

>>156625416
Thought about it a little more.

If they had the memories at the time they mutsubied while body swapped I don't think anything breaks and some things make more sense.

Mitsuha mutsubied Taki at 17/14. It was before the comet hit for both so while bodyswapped neither of them would have had memories of the disaster, Taki wouldn't have known about the town, the dream Taki had when first waking up in Mitsuha's body of meeting her on the train would have been a recent event, Mitsuha reading the お前は誰? in her notebook would have been about a month before in terms of her memories while in Taki's body.

Importantly Taki wouldn't really have been able to save Itomori because when he swapped into that body he wouldn't remember the stuff from his normal time period.

Taki mutsubied Mitsuha at 17/dead three years. So he had the memories he got while at the library of disaster area and everything in order to make the plans to save the residents and Mitsuha remembered the comet breaking and her death.
>>
>>156625606
Wondering this as well.
>>
>>156627195
Unfortunately this does break my own theory of Taki seeing the comet on the day he delivered the kuchikamizake to the mountain and realizing what was going to happen but losing the memory when swapping back, though if you consider him witnessing the scene as a dream just before he wakes up back in his own body it still kinda works.
>>
I teared up. It was a very nice move. I love sappy stuff like this.
>>
>>156627195
On other detail it would explain is Taki sitting with his legs open in Mitsuha's body.

In junior high (from my experience) students generally wear their gym uniforms under their school uniforms, so the girls are almost always wearing shorts under their skirts and so they don't worry about the way they sit so much. If Taki was just kinda emulating the behavior he knew then it's kinda explainable. Though he would know he wasn't wearing shorts so maybe not.

OP here, just wrote out a big response and hit esc so i'll try again...

The films animation and artwork are top notch, I don't believe i've seen anything in anime or western cartoons that can match up to it. The soundtrack was absolutely beautiful too. What makes the film so good is the attention to timing between the story, soundtrack and animation. After each re watch, I could only find myself more impressed, each scene is crafted so well, nothing seemed to be remotely out of place.

This is especially apparent during crucial scenes, like the body swapping montage and the final scene, where you can tell just how much attention to detail has been used to get the final product and it does a great job of enhancing the story.

The biggest flaw to the film lies in its plot. Given that the story tackles elements of time differences, body swapping and memories/dreams, there are bound to be a few plot holes, so I can acknowledge that that is an issue. However, I was so impressed by everything that was happening in the movie upon my first few viewings that it didn't really detract from the enjoyment, which is the whole purpose of a movie.

The second issue arises from flaws like unanswered questions, supporting characters not feeling developed enough, and the romance feeling rushed. Shinkai has voiced dissatisfaction with the story too, which he claimed could have been improved upon if they had more time to make the film or something like that. Again, it's a film that runs for just under 2 hours, and despite utilizing that time well, it's just not enough to cover absolutely everything.

In my opinion, there should have been more time spent on development between Taki and Mitsuha after the zen zen zense montage. The romance between them makes sense given that they were both immersed in the others life, and got to understand what kind of person they were through their interactions in each others bodies. However, the film needed to show that they started to develop feelings for each other while the body swapping was happening.

The other issue I think is with the scene near the end with the meteor. The story should elaborate on how every one actually got out, show the mayor evacuating people to the school, maybe also show tessie consoling Natori and demonstrate a spark of romance between them. Then the story could also potentially show that everyone forgets mitsuhas role in saving the town, following along with the supernatural element.

I certainly think the show is over hyped and a little overrated. There are other stories that would top the charts and surpass it if they had the animation, editing, and fitting soundtrack that Kimi no na wa has

>The biggest flaw to the film lies in its plot. However, I was so impressed by everything that was happening in the movie upon my first few viewings that it didn't really detract from the enjoyment, which is the whole purpose of a movie.
Honestly, I don't get what everyone's talking about with plot holes. Whoa they didn't see calendars and shit? No, they had plenty of evidence, calendars or not. But if you saw a calendar on the street dated 2014, what would you think? Time travel isn't an idea anybody leaps at.

>The second issue arises from flaws like unanswered questions, supporting characters not feeling developed enough, and the romance feeling rushed. Shinkai mostly says that the plot was fine, but he felt the film could've used more animation from Ando's team. If you read the novel, it's paced almost exactly the same.

>The other issue I think is with the scene near the end with the meteor. The story should elaborate on how every one actually got out, show the mayor
You're missing the point. The evacuation doesn't matter. The meteor isn't the villain, like they say, it's "nothing more than a beautiful sight." The emotional climax is Mitsuha gaining the confidence from seeing Taki's note to confront her Father. Actually, in the Novel, the scene ends right after she sees the I love you. Minor details like the evacuation aren't core to the emotionally driven narrative.
>>
>>156644470
Oh God. This image gives me a feeling of extreme comfiness and heart-warming emotion.
>>
>>156649552
I was trying to give a broad response to the other guy
personally I don't think the word plot holes is suitable, regarding who remembers what and when and shit like that can pretty much just be explained from the supernatural element, like why did taki forget mitsuhas name just before he writes it? It worked to enhance the film and create drama so there are no complaints to me

the flaws that I mentioned were more of a personal opinion, I think that the film would have been better if the aspects I mentioned were expanded on

and i know the meteor isn't the whole point of the story. again, its a personal preference, I can understand that the point of the scene is to show Mitsuha get the courage to confront her father, but it doesn't show any change in attitude from her father. Taki in mitsuhas body had confronted him earlier on but the mayor didn't listen, so why would he listen to mitsuha when she confronts him again?

apparently it already played in cinemas for a very short time in Australia, but I had no idea. It'll be online late May supposedly, but if its a really good movie you'd want to see it on the big screen.

I heard the SAO film was good, but I wasn't able to enjoy the series so I don't think i'd appreciate the film.

Kimi no na wa is just a great romance because the romance aspect is so unconventional. Shinkai could have been a dick and just ended the movie when they crossed each other on the bridge, but that'd just be 5 centimetres per second all over again. I'm glad they took the happy ending. The moment that Taki and Mitsuha pass each other on the stairs and the music drops my heart sunk, I can't seem to cry when I watch tv shows and movies, but I teared up a little when they turned around

DBZ is the only anime i can watch dubbed, purely because childhood memories of those voice actors, subbed wouldn't sound right.

I haven't seen the dubbed version but I wouldn't recommend it, you're better off just watching it on kissanime or something. The voice acting is really good and i can't imagine they'd get it right dubbed. Also, some of the scenes would probably sound really awkward because of the whole watashi/watakushi ore/boku thing

I was watching some Japanese version Dragonball on TV the other week and the voices just don't sound right. Goku's voice is way too high pitched etc

I wouldn't have called the people doing the voices for the fighters manly men in the English dub, but they did sound way better.

I'm 19 myself, only began watching anime after a friend suggested one in october last year but it sucked me right in.

yeah, I think thats what makes the romance so good. the movie takes it quite literally when someone says you can learn a lot about someone by walking in their shoes. You'd come to understand someone so well by living their life, seeing the challenges they face and such.

the red thread is such a good motif, I love that Taki wore Mitsuhas for three years and the way he gave it back to her on the mountain. both of them went to write on the other that they love each other instead of their names too I can't remember your name with this, can I?

just wait til you watch the intro, the song, character dialogue and animation all synchronize so well
>>
>>156657459
yeah the songs at least sound good in every way possible, it's just the translation issues. They can be excused in the case of Zenzenzense (it's a pop punk song, doesn't need to make sense, plus the chorus actually came out catchy) and Sparkle (does what it needs to do in the context of the film). But it really messes up the impact that the OP and ED songs are supposed to have, and as the other anon said this is a film where music and timing are very important.
>>
>>156657526
I'll forever believe that she was going to write "I love you" however it is written. It would fit the scene so much better

It's entirely possible that Shinkai made it look that way so the audience don't know what she was going to write

Welcome to Finland. Where I live, at summer we have ~4 hours of kataware-doki and no night at all.

Then at the height of winter, at worst we have barely 4 hours of "daylight", 2-7 hours of kataware-doki depending on what twilights it accommodates, and darkness that lasts 13 hours.

Why did my fucking ancestors think coming here was a good idea?!

At least if there was a place where you can speak to dead people during twilight, I could have nice long chats.
>>
>>156649545
You're a cool dude, anon. I wish there were more people like you. I agree with you, and hold the same opinion, mostly.
>>
The voice-acting was great in this movie. It didn't feel trope-y or stereotypically anime.
>>
>>156650742
Had it been as long as Disappearance, holy shit.

I'm glad it wasn't longer honestly, the brevity and breakneck pace of it makes it all the more dreamlike

I made this thread last night after watching the movie again over a few beers, fell asleep and found it again today. I've lurked around 4chan since 2013 and never posted anything, but I don't know many people who watch anime or have seen the film and I've really wanted to talk about it since the first time I saw it.

It's nice to know that there are other people out there that experienced the same feelings as myself when watching Kimi no na wa

>>156659304
yeah it would have really detracted from the film if the VAs put on "anime voices", i'm glad that they didn't. Mitsuhas VA did a really good job for her first big role

>>156659699
One can only dream :( hopefully shinkai will make the next film longer

anon, I have the heart of a little girl. I can cry just thinking about the movie, or listening to the OST.
mitsuha is a heartless monster only because she can only love taki
>>
>>156660257
Yeah I think that's what Shinkai was going for anyway, which I can appreciate. Adding in extra scenes or expanding on ones that were there would risk messing up the pacing and the effect of the film.

I think that the source material could be used in a 12 episode series because the extra time would allow for the story and character development to flourish a little more. But for a single movie, the amount of detail works well
>>
>>156660563
I wish I could be like that, I know this might come off sounding edgy, but i've become so jaded these days that nothing makes me feel strong emotion, happy or sad. This movie didn't make me cry, but it really made me feel something
>>
>>156617444

I seriously contemplated flying from the U.S. to
Australia just to be able to see it in theaters there. I wouldʻve gone through with it but for a job offer I received before I actually booked.
>>
Watching the movie again I still have problems with the Mitsuha side during the date.

She was thinking "they must be together now" while doing her hair, which means it was at least 10:30am, from my research it's about 5 hours from Hida to Tokyo, so she would have arrived at like 3:30pm at best, trying to get back to Itomori the same day would have been touch and go even leaving Tokyo around 5pm because, especially in the countryside, trains don't go very late.

I could understand if she went early but they took out the ambiguity.
>>
>>156661840

I donʻt think that line is meant to literally mean theyʻre together right at that moment; Mitsuha is congratulating herself on successfully pairing Taki and Okudera (like how she set up Teshi and Sayaka.)

Some threads ago people brought up this scene as being a mistake because of his junior high uniform instead of high school, but just before it you see his cellphone and it is an iPhone 5ish model, like Mitsuha's, so it is definitely from when he was in junior high, it's just showing him checking the news at that time.

What if I want to see Taki and Mitsuha gently loving each other in the missionary position in bed, under the sheets, with the lights turned off?
>>
>>156663136
Then you are a pervert of the highest level and should get the fuck off this board.
>>
>>156662549
It makes even less sense then if it was early morning. She had no idea how he would handle the date and she had to know he would probably mess it up.

I dunno, I think the whole thing would have been better if it was kept in the dark as it was in the LN.

If you check how Mitsuha wrote her name in hiragana for the first time on Taki's hand, you'll see her "mi" is curvy and it's not a straight line like she wrote on Taki's hand on kataware-doki.

When I went to see it in the cinema I was literally the only person there it was great. I was absolutely bouncing in my seat near the end worried they weren't gonna turn around.

Still think them forgetting everything is horse shit.

I saw this a couple of days ago. I honestly didn't expect it to be very good because the premise didn't sound at all interesting to me, but I've got to say that I've never had a more powerful experience in the cinema. It completely blew me away. I didn't even care about the plot because the atmosphere was so emotional, the animation was so beautiful and the flow from one scene to another with all the music and everything was flawless.

5/5 bretty good.

damn, where the fuck can i watch it in 1080p? nyaa is down and i dont know where to look
help pls
>>
>>156671767
there's only an overcompressed, watermarked 720p screener until the BDs are out in july. It's easy to find on non anime sites, but it's best to wait or go to the cinema. It's a Shinkai film, seeing it with subpar visuals is a true disservice

Still kicking myself for not noticing this movie while it was in cinemas in Australia. That's a good way of explaining it, I think it's a great plot, but if I saw any story that had the animation/soundtrack/etc all sync up as well as Kimi no na wa then it'd be amazing

Na, it said he suddenly became interested in the town several years after it happened.

Problem is people didn't realize it was a flashback just going over the news of the event and the miraculous survival of the townsfolk, which would have been headline news for days. Him seeing it isn't unusual at all.

Watch it online a bunch of times and then watch the BD when it comes out.
