Its been probably over a decade since I've watched Z but I really don't remember this or Buu having that ability. I remember them fighting Buu, winning, and then allowing themselves to be eaten/abosrbed so they could free the rest

It was in Kai as well. Anyway this was anime-only thing, a lot of fights got extended (in a good way) in the anime, such as SSJ2 Goku vs SSJ2 Majin Vegeta (which was like 2 pages in the manga and that was it) or Ultimate Gohan vs Bootenks which was whole 1 page long in the manga.
