i think we miss out on a lot of the wordplay, but it's easy to tell when it's supposed to be funny banter and we can still understand the important things. so not the full experience, but not a seriously deprived on either.

Some of the scenes in monogatari second season are an untranslatable mess of puns. They just barely make sense when you spell them out like in the left but they're not funny or anything.
The whole scene should just have a giant TL note saying "Senjogahara makes a bunch of bad puns" it might be better than whatever commie were trying to do on the right.

It was interesting the first time, then it became the same shit over and over again. Shaft doesn't even animate it anymore, they just put a shot of Ougi tilting her head gaining its reputation of being a power point presentaion.

The highlight of this anime is fan service, butt, boob, armpit, thigh, we have all we want in this anime. no need to be Japanese to feel it.

Honestly, japanese humor is inferior.

It's a poorly developed language with little to no space for double entendres and complex articulations, asides from the "lol it sounds like this" or "it's kanji for that". The very concept of sarcasm just flies over their heads as well (ask about this to anyone who has lived in Japan, seriously, do it), and everything is either over-the-top slapstick or scatological, stereotype exploitation or extremely exaggerated situations. And why does everything has to be based around the Boke/Tsukkomi (funny man/straight man) dualogy? Consider also the fact that the japanese are inept at writing good dark or exploitable humor and can't find the proper moment of their jokes, ultimately resorting to poorly-written slapstick, toiled jokes and "have everyone overreacting to everything and hitting each other". Maybe it all comes down to the japanese being a nation of people with many childish traits, but facts are facts. Japanese humor is about everyone getting it, which necessarily brings it down to the lowest common denominator of intelligence.

Humor is an universal language, that has the duty to be creative above all - a joke is always funnier the first time you understand it. Since creativity and originality aren't exactly things the asians and by consequence the japanese are very good at (at least outside porn), and since humor isn't even an important part of their culture, you can begin to see what generally prevents them from writing good humor.

tl;dr: Western humor is god tier compared to Japanese humor. Srsly, they're shit at it.

I don't know moon but the wordplay in that show was like half the show for me. I'd try to pay attention to it. Isn't entry level shit though, you won't enjoy it nearly as much if it is your first show. Really surprising how fast you start to conciously/subconciously pick up info about the language and culture of anime. And how much more you enjoy anime over time even if you didn't actively try to learn from them.
