Same here. TTGL was actually my first anime that got me into learning what fansubs were. I caught up to the show on ep23. The episode ended with Simon making a shit eating grin saying "Let's go, it's our final battle" and from then on, I had to wait one week for a new ep till the end. Hype was unreal each time.

It's a decent title, but not one that deserves the praise it's getting.

The story in the second half was badly done. The dialogues and monologues were cliche, the mecha battles leaved a lot to be desired, and it was just powering up after powering up instead of actually offering us actual mecha having a go at each other.

Many of the characters were just fodder and didn't bring anything new to the table. The ending was contradictory to all the themes it was building up to.

But that's really typical of Kazuki Nakashima. Yeah, he's the one who edited the Getter Robo Saga Futabasha compilation, and his Getter fanboyism is showing in TTGL, but overall, he's just an average writer who has like a few cool ideas, but cannot develop them to them to their full potential without feeling like cheap ass pulls.

Oh, and no JAM Project or something similar. Sad.

But the truth of the matter is, I don't care if a super robot show has terrible writing, as long as the fights were good. They weren't since and worst, the characters kept interrupting with boring speeches. Otherwise, TTGL would have easily been a 8/10 for me.

Not really. What's most annoying about TTGL is that it constantly tries to portray itself as a parody of super robots in the first half. When the second half hits, it expects us to forget the parody aspect, and take it as seriously as we can.

When I watched Shin Mazinger, Getter Robo Armageddon, Giant Robo, Gaiking LODM, GaoGaiGar, Gravion, Godannar etc, I was already on board with the concept. These shows were as serious as they could be and played the genre straight, and they didn't need to do this tap dance and pretend that they were merely a jest.

As a result, when shit hit the fan during the climax, I can fully get behind the seriousness of the situation.

None of them have anything special about them, or if they do, it's not explored at all. But since im not into mecha, I love the series to death. If I did love mecha, I probably wouldn't be able to get over a perceived loss of opportunity to actually focus on what the creators want you to focus on. I wouldn't be able to watch it the way it was meant to be watched. Which is basically your logic center disabled entirely and your emotional bits all cranked up to eleven.

I think the main reason I love TTGL so much is that I went into the series completely skeptical of all the hype it was getting and came out with my expectations completely fulfilled with so much room to spare.

I have watched and loved the other series it pays homages too (Getter/GGG etc) but I have not enjoyed them nearly as much as TTGL. I can understand why /mu or other genrefags dislike it, but it will always be a 10/10 masterpiece for me.

It's valid criticism levelled against the show. There are many problems with TTGL but fans refuse to even discuss them, and instead act like fanboys because the show makes them feel good. I barely even shat on TTGL and even praised the glorious first half. I've been way harsher on some recent Gundam shows than I've ever been on your golden egg.

Do you know that the majority of English Getter fans today started out with TTGL? We just splintered and became actual mecha fans, because we liked what we saw in TTGL and wanted to explore instead of acting like TTGL is some pinnacle of anime or some shit. (Because I actually like anime, not just franchises) Now we have to deal with LOGH fags who can't see further than their own show, and gets frustrated when you point them out that their space politics is not some untouchable masterpiece.

When I give out information like this, if you're level headed enough, you take it in, thank Ken Ishikawa who's in the heavens, and move on. It makes the anime community more informed and humble, and not like tumblr.

I love Getter, so I spread it as I can, literally nothing wrong with that.
