But the beauty standards were also the same between the higher classes that didn't suffer from malnourishment at all.
In fact, beauty standards historically (now I'm not talking 100 years past but way earlier) have been influenced by attributes that hinted to wealth like paleness or being slightly chubby.
I find it natural that Japan, a country that hasn't experienced such an intense cultural shift in sexual matters as the West still conserves their traditional ideal of beauty (although it's been progressively changing for decades at a slower pace, the existence of popular JAV actresses and models with "Western"-typed bodies is a testament to this) that emphasizes paleness, neoteny and chastity.
