I don't want to sound like a fucking Naruto autist but to be fair, Itachi was set up from the jump to be an unparalleled genius that shit on everything and everyone else that wasn't fifty years old and/or wearing a Ninja Mayor hat.

For years Itachi was Sasuke's Gilligan's Island. But Sasuke had to keep being made stronger because he's the main character of the series for so long, and after a while (early into Shippuden ) Sasuke was at the point where he realistically had a shot at Itachi, given Itachi was at the level he was at the last time we saw him when he fought Kakashi and the other jobbers near the end of the first series.

Sasuke was ready to leave Gilligan's Island too early, so they had to asspull some more magic eye powers for Itachi to make him a benchmark again.

It's a fucking cycle. Kishimoto didn't think Naruto'd go on that long and wrote himself into corners all the time around powerlevels, so he'd just retcon and assppull himself out of it because it's fucking shounen and who cares.

Like when Tsunade is hyped as by far the GOAT doctor wizard early on in the series, and is shown to struggle with repairing Lee's spine because bone shards are too near it and that isn't really repairable if it gets damaged
And then in Shippuden she gets cut in half with a fucking tree
And Orochimaru sticks her back together and she's a-ok because HE'S actually the best medic of all time lmao
