I mean, if you like battle shounen, read em or watch em. If you don't they're not gonna change your opinion on the genre. I'd recommend reading both over watching them, but Togashi tends to have some pretty bad art quality dips. The 2011 HxH anime is pretty decent, however the Yu Yu Hakusho anime is ass, even if nostalgiafags claim otherwise. Level E is still Togashi's best work though in my opinion.

I would say that they're must reads op. HxH is hands down my favorite shonen and YuYu Hakusho is great too. Anime wise HxH one of the few shonen that i would recommend watching. I never watched all of YYH but ive heard good things about it.

I like battle shonen but of late, i've gotten tired of dumb protagonists and convenient shit taking place. The only shonen I like in recent times is World Trigger. I liked it because of its tactical fights, focus on strategy, focus on side characters etc. So I just wanted to know if HxH has typical dumb characters doing dumb shit and slapstick comedy etc.

my nigga.You'll like hunter but I'll warn you may be ify towards Gon the MC in the beginning he's not unlikable but he is a kid just a nice, naive, and straight forward it can be very charming at times there are plenty of other characters to enjoy in hunter.
Normally when people talk about hunter they refer to just a certain arc leaving the expectations too high too early enjoy the ride man I wish I could watch it for the first time.

Newfag to the series who started by watching 1999 adaptation first and now I'm around ep90 of 2011 version. The show and cast are great, and surprisingly dark too.

1999 > 2011. The old adaptation has way superior art, atmosphere AND animation, plus way more killer soundtrack. The new one is fucking flat and static most of the time, and even recycles ONE OP throughout the whole show. Not to mention '11 version skips and speeds up tons of stuff in the beginning, including some quite essential character introduction and -building scenes, that they then embarrassingly have to go back to recap dozens of episodes later as they forgot / didn't know them to be relevant later on.

Yu Yu Hakusho < Hunter X Hunter, but both are great and have good anime adaptions. There are asspulls in both of them, but HXH has quite a bit of strategy and tactical thinking.

I got a feeling that "most" current /a/ goers have never even considered watching the 1999 adaptation.

Those few that have, however, tend to favor the old TV series. I know I do, and I just started watching the show earlier this year. Checked out ep1 of both versions before deciding to go with 1999 adaptation first; the 2011 one literally summarized more than 3 episodes into one, and skipped tons of material, all while also looking uglier and worse animated to my eye to boot.

If you're Op i'm gonna tell you this before this gets out of hand. 1999 vs 2011 is something that has always been debated in these threads. I myself started with 1999 and had no real complaints I couldn't even tell if the filler was filler. Both have things they do well but there is bias on each end of the argument you just gotta experience it for yourself.
I don't have much of a problem with either but there are details left out in the beginning that are definitely relevant to a lot about gons journey and motivation

I've never seen it be hated literally anywhere.
And no, I ain't pretending anything. 1999 version is vastly superior, both objectively and subjectively. Only thing 2011 has over 1999 version is the fact that it covers more of the story, being released a whole decade later.

I somewhat stomached the very beginning of 2011, but started fast-forwarding and skipping a lot when the Hunter's exam ended. And I fucking hated what they did to the Yorkshin arc.

It's even more ridiculous that you can see kids praising 2011 for having "superior animation", when it practically LACKS animation completely at times. Still images, simple loops and static, flashing backgrounds are NOT animation. And what's with the CYMK color palette and making everybody a blond?
