Sometimes when a Laser-Disc was pressed, the the halves were poorly fused together. This causes "disc rot" where oxygen leaks in between the two halves & literally eats the disc away from the inside out. I wish it was a random thing, but it affects certain laserdiscs no matter if they're new or not. ADV's english laserdiscs for example always rot away to nothing, & I'm pretty sure that's why they never released the 3rd gunsmith cats or the rest of Eva, because they realized they were fuckups & couldn't do it properly. I don't think they finished Goldenboy in english either.

ADV basically just said "eh, fuck it, nobody was buying our laserdiscs anyway" & just stopped making them instead. They went full speed into VHS after that & then did DVDs before they went bankrupt. GG ADV.

They were a pretty shitty company. As an example, they purposely lowered the resolution of their Kino's Journey DVDs by 30% so people wouldn't reverse import them from Japan. There's other examples of their shitty business practice, but it's been so long that I can't remember any. I remember the Video quality for the end of evangellion was similarly horrible for the same reason. People like to make fun of 4kids for butchering anime, but they never mention AVD fucking things up. People just aren't aware of it I guess.
