Katanagatari's ending was doomed to be lackluster the moment the creator of the swords himself had to come back from the dead to explain the purpose of the whole journey, which wasn't only stupidly cheesy but also meaningless because it ruined any kind of credibility that Togame's ambitions had, y'know, the protagonist of the show which was supposed to be about ? And not some dead fuck who foresaw some premonition that only had a moderate chance to actually happen.

And yeah, even if it makes sense, the whole thing about the ending illustrating how everyone failed at their goals is still underwhelming, because the characters had so many contradictions (aside from Shichika, who's the only character that was done right in the end) because it tried too hard to be deep and added too many layers of additional characterization than it needed, that at this point you had given up any interest in them so them failing or succeeding felt hollow either way.

Ending was rushed to hell and they emotionally built up Togame x Shichika just to have Togame go "lol it was just a prank bro". Nothing made sense and it finished off vague as fuck. What the fuck was accomplished?

At least Shichika gets to dick Hitei, still they gave us a bullshit open ending.

It was fine she died. But it wasn't even "She was just saying 'it was just a prank bro, to get Shichika to move on without her". They made it some dumb "I'm a slave to my own ambitions" thing.

She could have at least shown a little humanity at the end and just gone all the way with the romance narrative because that's basically what we've been fed throughout the entire series. "Lol I was just pretending, but I guess I like you" was completely out of the loop.

This ending would've worked if we had more hints into Togame's character. Maybe even showing us a few scenes of her contemplating killing Shichika throughout the journey. That she uses everyone and everything as pawns. Something to set up her last words at the end. They just sprung all of that shit on us at the last minute and it did not make sense after scene after scene of just romantic fluff that we were invested in. They built up in one direction just to switch gears that completely throws it off course.

She died like a piece of shit, but at least make us agree she was before ending it the way they did.

I definitely see where you're coming from but I feel that showing her actually contemplating killing shichika would be a bit heavy handed. I felt like we got enough insight with her backstory about her father and the Maniwa troops hinting at her being a backstabbing manipulative cunt

But that's not nearly enough. The Maniwa troops were cannon fodder and whatever they say never really held much weight to begin with. They were the ones who betrayed Togame, there are two sides and if we're just going to believe whatever those silly ninjas say, then I guess this ending makes 100% sense.

But I strongly disagree. They clearly set up foundations for Togame forgiving Shichika in the 11th episode. And the ending in my opinion should've been "my time with you (Shichika) was the best year of my life. You changed me and taught me how to feel, to play, to love. I forgive you for what your father did, I'm glad I met you and was able to teach you how to be human, because you taught me how to be human too."

Cue the screech of ntr from Shichika, he takes a few scenes of Hitei and Emon setting up in the Shogunate Castle, and Shichika storms the place killing everyone and breaking the blades. Dying at the end, because he's got nowhere to go without Togame, because that's what was established throughout the series.

"I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT YOU TOGAME!"

Bottom line, the ending could've worked. If they built up to it. They didn't, it should've been completely different, and it has us grabbing for straws to make sense of it. Completely irritating.
