That's not a criticism of the movie, though. That's just your response to the hype surrounding it. Judge it objectively based on your own criteria and not what everyone else has been saying about it.

I get what you're saying. It's just that the movie didn't click for me, if you get what i mean. So i have no good comments on it.

>>156339440
Yeah, I get it. I think this happens fairly often with highly critically acclaimed or very popular films, at least from my own experience. It's very easy to look at something and wonder what all the fuss is about without ever really getting into it.

I saw Kimi no Na Wa knowing only the general premise of the body-swapping, heard it had gorgeous visuals, and that it was pretty popular. I went and saw it on a day when I had nothing better to do and was actually very surprised at how much I liked it. Expectations can make or break films for people a lot of the time.

Who do you think seems to be more of an academic achiever than the other?

I'd say Taki, since he does seem to be confident with his studies if he bothers to spare time for part-time shifts. Mitsuha has to be reminded by her sister to stay focused on her studies.

>>
>>156345680
Just strictly speaking based on their high-school lives. I don't want to sound too ignorant, but if we consider that Mitsuha is almost entirely learning on her own without parents to help out (along with Granny and Yotsuha being little to no help), Mitsuha is stuck with less support from whatever resource is available at her town and from her also-average friends. Compared to Taki, who has his dad, Tokyo resources and two friends that are likely over-achievers, it seems like a solid guess to say he is.

We won't be getting SHIT.

The novel really adds a new dimension onto some of the scenes.

>Then, once again, I broke out in a dash.
>I’m not scared anymore. Not frightened of anyone. Not lonely.
>I understand now.
>I am in love. We are in love.
>That’s why we’re going to meet again.
>That’s why I’m going to live.
>I will live.
>No matter what happens, even if a comet falls on me, I will live.

And the scene actually ends there. Doesn't even confront her father.

Kind of lends credence to the idea that this was really the climax of the film, and the crux of what Shinkai is trying to say with this movie about proactivity versus passiveness. Pretty much until this scene Mitsuha has been flustered and just kind of sucked up whatever shit happened to her. Not until this point does she really take initiative, and it's the moment when she finds meaning in her life.

>Yet, I thought as I walked out of another interview. Yet, I was still struggling. To put it in an exaggerated way, I was struggling against life. Was this what I had decided back then? To struggle. To live. To breath and walk. To run. To eat. To tie together. To simply live naturally, like how I naturally spilled tears at ordinary pictures of an ordinary village.
>Just a little longer, I thought.

These monologues are cut out of the movie, and he repeats "Just a little longer" like a trillion times. BUT that same line is repeated in Nandemonaiya, so that song actually ends up directly reflecting the plot. It's almost diegetic, in a way.

Also, the fact that Mitsuha was trying to set up Tessie and Sayaka since day 1

I liked that scene too. I felt the subs lose the meaning with how it makes him say "it was good" as a means of praise. He actually says it more like he was "glad" to be able to see Itomori as it looked 3 years ago, which shows that he's so willing to help Taki in his search because Taki is searching for something that the ramen guy had long gave up on ever looking back at. Really shows how much this town meant to people other than just the city boy.

It's done so well they're probably just raking it in until the profits slow down, then they can hype up the BD release and make even more. Plus delaying the BD keeps SEA (and westerners for that matter) from pirating the shit out of it before they even have a theatrical run.

>>156353657
>I wouldn't call the story weak, just basic, nothing groundbreaking.

Eh, that's what I thought at first, but the thing is, there's a lot to this movie. It's more than a romance and a disaster movie. Novelty is pretty overrated anyways, new ideas are rare, what's better is to approach old ideas in new ways.

I mean, first of all, how often do you actually see a body swap anime? It's been a funny concept for a long time, but almost never explored as an actual plot device, outside of the usual gags and one-off episodes. Kokoro connect? Maybe? Does Ranma count?
But while that is kind of cute and hedges the way for a nice, and terribly unconventional romance to form, the important part of the plot comes after. The comet is literally just the 2011 Earthquake, and the movie kind of plays into that anxiety of natural disaster, which is why I think it resonated with so many Japanese. But it uses this fear to make a very unusual point for a Shinkai movie, or hell, any anime movie nowadays.

See, most Shinkai movies are about loss. Losing a lover, losing a friend, losing a passion and whatever due to circumstances outside your control. And they depict people going through grief and eventually accepting that loss, and moving on. But Shinkai himself said he had a change of heart after the Earthquake. Before, he felt that Japan was in decline and nothing could be done about that, so the only thing you can do is accept it and enjoy life while the world falls apart. Derive meaning and knowledge from your loss.

Kimi no na wa, instead, is his refutation of that concept. After the Quake, Shinkai went on about the threat of destruction, and how he wants people to live proactive, fulfilling lives instead. That Japan wasn't doomed. That nothing, not even time, is really out of your control, so long as you have a sake-spitting girlfriend. But it's not pure optimism. Yes, you will suffer. For 8 years, maybe. But be assured that in the end, it'll be worth it.

As for the last switch, Taki says it's been 2-3 weeks for him since he last saw Itomori, so it's between mid October 2016 and October 4th 2013.

Oh come on, we only see like four characters in Tokyo and they were probably the most likely to go to Tokyo because that's where all the young people want to go.

There are a bunch of other nearby cities the rest of the population could have gone to. Hida is pretty small, Toyama is not far away, Nagoya is to the south. Even Osaka is closer than Tokyo.

Stop your bitching.

hmm, seems when taki was into reading articles on what happened in itomori after it had been saved, he was in middle school still

that's his middle school outfit hanging up, and the jacket is the same one he was wearing when the comet hit
>>
>>156337686
It was ok at best. I went in with high expectations so I was kinda disappointed. Might have set the bar too high.
>>
>>156357662
Strange, I am pretty sure in the LN during his monologue he mentions that it was weird that he became interested in Itamori well after the comet hit.

But you're right, that's definitely not a seasonal uniform. Though it would have been pretty big news at the time anyway, perhaps in the BD version we will be able to see the date on the calendar to be able to tell.
>>
>>156340999
Musubi needed to connect it's shrine maiden with someone in the future who would be able to save the town from the comet. Mitsuha wanted to become a handsome Tokyo boy, so that more or less narrows it down to Taki.

Kimi No Na Wa quite honestly changed my life.
I haven't watched any anime since, because i finally realized that the entire medium is shit and it's not worth going through 100s of shit shows and movies (Like this one) to get to the one thing that's good.

I only browse /a/ out of habit
>>
>>156357662
He literally changed the past so maybe the town miraculously surviving caught his past selfs interest when the original timelines events didn't.
>>

Yeah, would say same room, younger Taki. No sketches on the wall, less books.

The next question is exactly when it is in the timeline. If it is shortly after the comet hitting then it would have been common news he was looking at.

I think they also use this part to tell us that there were no deaths and the rumors about how Itomori was saved which is also handled in monologue in the LN.

All the posters, all the fanart, everywhere in the movie shows the splitting comet from this same angle, but I feel like that's not what a comet would look like if it was aiming for the place you're currently standing. Shouldn't it be coming in more from the side, lower to the horizon? I feel like by the time you can see it up high with a wide tail, it's already completely missed the planet. Or at least your side of the planet.

Pretty much.

To be fair, though, I think anon isn't giving them credit where it's due. 君の名前は as the last line includes the character 前, which is featured in several other prominent places in the film: Taki's hastily-scribbled "お前は誰だ" (Omae wa dare da/Who are you) as well as in the title of the song "前前前世" (Zenzenzense/The song that plays while they're bodyswapping). I thought that the use of the more formal form of the word "name," combining both 名 and 前, tied up those parts of the film nicely even though I wouldn't have noticed it of they'd just said 君の名は.

You can definitely pick up on a lot of the little references and things that gloss over you the first time. Like when Mitsuha answers the phone and goes, "Tessie? No, I just didn't feel like it..." you already know she's talking about skipping school because she went to Tokyo to see Taki, who didn't remember her. Same with the conversation about her haircut - you already know it's either because she's trying to get over Taki ("why do all guys think haircuts have to do with boys?") or just because she gave her ribbon away to him and won't wear her hair the same way. At least for me, things like this are already forgotten once the reveal comes around, so it's nice to pick up on them again. There are other examples throughout the film, too.

I was a little less emotionally invested in it the second time around, simply because I already knew the ending, but the scenes themselves still carry plenty of emotional weight. I'm glad I saw it again - I was nervous I wouldn't like it as much a second time.
>>
>>156372026
It gives way for emotions to hit you hard once you already know what will happen, since your brain was mystery-solving in the first viewing. I did shed tears for the reunion scenes, and really felt more happy to realize that Musubi connected them all along.

Why did neither of them check the calendar when they switched bodies? With the dates being offset, one of them would either wake up on a saturday when it was supposed to be tuesday, or they'd experience october 14th twice because it would be both a monday and a friday in the time skip.
>>
>>156377253
Plot-convenient amnesia. Even when they're in the midst of switching bodies and seem to remember the most, they do describe the experience as dream-like. I'm not too bothered by the fact that the date would be one of many apparently insignificant things that would be forgotten.

Also, before Taki (as Mitsuha) walks to the shrine with Yotsuha and Hitoha, he does come downstairs in her school uniform, prompting Yotsuha to ask why she's wearing it. I'm presuming that the kids aren't skipping school to walk to the shrine, and it's a weekend when Taki thought it would be a weekday. Or perhaps he just never spent a weekend as Mitsuha.

Then again, the last we see of that day is Hitoha saying "You're dreaming, aren't you," and then Taki wakes up in bed at the start of a new day in his body, so maybe it's not really a 1-to-1 experience when they switch. (i.e. Mitsuha could have spent that entire day in Taki's body, while Taki only spent the half day before being "woken" by Hitoha.)

That, or it's a fantasy movie with gods and magic and time travel, so who knows.

Honestly I really do find it hard to believe neither of them found someone else within eight years.
>>
>>156387562
I was actually pissed off at that. I mean, clearly they *knew* somehow that they were going to forget. Throwing away what might have been their one chance to find each other to be cute was just so not worth it. He wasted five years of both their lives.

It's really not hard to not get into a romantic relationship with someone. I shouldn't need to be telling you this.
>>
>>156387877
I asked about this in another thread and I heard the idea Taki was pretty much sure he couldn't write his name anyways because if it can fuck up his phone anything is possible. He wanted to write something he knew she could take

Mitsuha was actually starting to write I love you also
>>

Even if you're not actively looking for someone else, you're bound to fall for someone down the line, especially since they're both normal people. Eight years is a long ass time. Why would someone hold off on other relationships just because you have a feeling you might meet someone you've basically completely forgotten about? Obviously musubi and what not but I'm trying to use logic here.
>>
>>156388064
>both normal people

Doesn't Taki state he's been looking for something? He doesn't feel ready

They went to the underworld to to get back a life from the gods. Legends around the world always say that they exact a steep price. Taki himself heard from Mitsuha's grandmother that that you have to leave behind what is most important to you. He probably knew they were going to forget and lose any notes from the twilight meeting, but figured he might as well try to get Mitsuha's name. In the best case scenario he gets her name and finds her again. Worst case scenario he at least gets to tell her that he loves her. He was just surprised because she didn't even get to finish writing her name. At least that's one way to interpret it.

This is why someone needs to translate the manga. My Japanese is pretty shit and I can barely read it, and I'm still learning a ton. It's only, like, three volumes anyways.

In the manga, where the epilogue is from Mitsuha's POV, it pretty much details how she just went to college and got a busy job in Tokyo. At one point Yotsuha calls her and tells her to just go to a marriage interview or something, and another part here where she gets asked out by a colleague, here.

CAKE MITSUHA IS PURE. PURE.

"名" alone is generally only used in written language and is rarely spoken; "名前" is used for both. "名" is a bit more poetic and creates a shorter, better-sounding title, but it would be odd for them to say "君の名は" aloud to each other.

In the past, "名" was used alone and "名前"was a bit more honorific, but nowadays "名前" is the default and "お名前" is used when being polite. And by past, I mean like the 1800s, so it's not a recent change that either of them would be aware of.

Not too exciting... I fell in love with a girl when I was 14 and she kind of fell off the face of the earth without me ever telling her how I feel. A few years later after I turned 18 she showed up again and confessed to me that she loved me.
We shared a few beautiful months together before she decided that I was a different person than who she fantasized about when thinking of me while we were apart.
We stayed in contact for a bit, but eventually she just gave me the silent treatment permenantly and that was that.

It doesn't have the same effect as the 5 year skip because it would have meant that Taki barely had to wait and Mitsuha was always in Tokyo the whole time during the switches. The 8-year skip for Mitsuha ensures that there's more behind the scenes and she probably did not get used to living in Tokyo with the rest of the town until she became more of an adult living her life.

Movie was good, but this gaping plot hole at the end brought it down a lot. 6.5/10 at best.
>>
So... I just found out that Keit-ai and Kimi no na wa share a LOT of plot similarities.

What is this sorcery? Does Shinkai browse this shithole or was it just pure coincidence? Not even memeing, looking for serious answers
>>
>>156400142
Keit-ai is a meme because of the shared joke of how noticeably cliched it is.

Kimi no Na Wa takes some of these cliches in the premise and uses effective writing and storytelling to create something different. Anime tropes are not unique to 4chan.
>>
>>156399779
>5 (or even more) different plot adjustments
It's hard to think there is still plot hole in this movie.
>>
>>156400242
>Some

Replace body swapping with phones and you have the EXACT same plot as Keit-ai.

This can't be a mere coincidence, right?
>>
>>156400361
It's not the exact same thing, Keit-ai has the whole alternate universe bit, and each character helps the other try and go out with the other in their respective universe.

Taking out the cell phones/body swapping/alternate universes just leaves you with an anime where a boy and girl likes each other and a supernatural element is involved. Again, this is hardly a story unique to 4chan.

I'm sure plenty of people involved in creating anime browse /a/, 2chan, etc. They're all fans of anime themselves, at the end of the day. I just don't agree that they're stealing an "idea" that's effectively only a joke about a few anime cliches. The copypasta is only funny because of how recognizably generic it is - I don't think anyone needs to lurk here to write a similar story.

>>156337686
It's not my favorite from the director, but overall I enjoyed it. I watched it at 1 AM so I want to give it another go to make sure I didn't miss anything. The plot and story were really interesting to me, but it didn't seem like there was much character development imo. The relationship between the main characters was cut into a sequence, and it shows them how they cope with switching without much dialogue.
>>
>>156405820
Yeah same. I feel like they could have easily made it a standard 2 hour movie. the 1hour 45~minute time felt a little too short
>>
>tfw everything could have been resolved nearly instantly had one character taken a look at the current year .

Why did neither of them ever look at the date? They were both constantly using their phones, there's no way they wouldn't see what the date is.

Even if they didn't, surely one of them would have noticed the incorrect date on newspapers, TV, school assignments, pay stubs, or something?
>>
>>156406587
>>156406587

I hear that complaint, but honestly it makes no sense to me. This movie has some of the most characterization I've ever seen in any anime movie, but large swathes are nuanced and subtle. Consider how much about Taki you learn before he even shows up in the story. Or how much of their characteristics are reflected in body language and animation. Like the Katawaredoki scene, just look at Mitsuha's face when she first sees Taki. That's just a tremendously expressive scene. Great deals of context and information are also hidden in the background, I've talked to some people who didn't even realize Taki wanted to be an Architect, or that Mitsuha was actively trying to ruin Taki's date.

Not to say that the movie didn't have any flaws. The second act was a little rushed and the rotoscoping looked off. Also, compared to Masaki Ando's other work, he didn't really have any space to shine, and there weren't any PARTICULARLY impressive moments like
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OZ1_sIP1Dk
in Tokikake either, though the Sake sequence was neat. But that part was a little heavy handed, if emotionally potent. Generally, movie's very low on Sakuga.

But come on. Compared to Princess Mononoke? Spirited Away? Or even shit like Tokikake or Cagliostro? These are some very well-developed characters with discernible personalities, motivations, and quirks. I'd say the characterization is even better than Honnemaise.
>>
So what was up with that scene of Mitsuha running on the edge of the crater trying to find Taki?

It was like 2 FPS for 5 seconds
>>
>>156407139
I don't see the year on my phone, anon. The only weird thing is that both their calendar apps didn't have the year, but it's not like that's a necessity for everyday life. As for the outside, I feel like Taki wouldn't have easily been able to notice the difference. He spent his time hanging out with Tessie and Sayaka, not watching and reading bumpkin TV and newspapers. Mitsuha is a bit of a stretch, but you just have to assume she was so overwhelmed at everything she didn't bother to notice the details.
>>
the whole end of the movie, the characters start to look off, dunno if its a budget or time issues.

This part always sticks out even from the first time watching

That was terrible. The movie is abusing every lazy plot convenience there is without ever trying to explain or excuse anything. Everything is beautifully animated in order to maximize the feels without having a speck of logic in whatever is going on. You are supposed to shut your brain because of the pretty colors, laugh while they are groping breasts, cry when the girl is running in the woods, and don’t give a fuck about the plot.

Also, apparently nobody ever mentions the year or talks about recent events in this setting.

It's not that they didn't notice, really. It's just that they never thought anything of it. The dates were off, obviously Taki knew when they visited the shrine. And even outside of the switching, Mitsuha told Taki about the comet in the sky.

But the thing is, neither of them thought that a time difference was even possible. If your brain isn't receptive to an idea, no matter how much information you have, you don't think about it. Taki sees the thing about the comet, which might as well be Mitsuha saying "I'm from three years ago" and dismisses it as nonsense because he doesn't have that possibility in his head.

If you walk down the street, and you see a calendar from 2014, do you think "Shit, I went back in time" or "who left this old calendar up?"

I went to watch the movie with my father because you guys hyped it so much, I wanted to make him participate in my hobby for once.

5 minutes into the movie and the boy waking up as a girl fondled his breasts. I turned my face to the right to watch my father's reaction. He had this really sad and disappointed look on his face and asked me: "Why did you take me to watch one of those hentais of yours?".

He then proceeded to stand up and left the theatre. I couldn't even concentrate for the rest of the movie, shaken as I was by the feelings of shame.

So, thank you very much guys for making my relationship with my father ever worse than it already was.

Mitsuha was only seen at Tokyo Station early in the day, she may not have been at the same station where Taki was meeting Okudera.
>>
>>156400142
They don't really.
>>
Throwing this out there as a counterpoint to the double すきだ theory:

It's pretty clear in the movie that no one knows how the fuck musubi magic works. Taki wasn't certain the sake would work, and they're both shocked for a moment when katawaredoki works.

In pic related, Taki is dumbstruck at Mitsuha's disappearance, suggesting that he probably wanted her to finish writing her name. And Mitsuha happy-cries when she reads his confession. The situation is anything but "just as planned."

Mitsuha's single stroke isn't enough to base the theory on either. It could have been the first part of み, or (less likely) ミツハ or 三葉. The stroke isn't as long as it looks - the marker just dragged along Taki's palm as it fell. Also as others have mentioned, the stroke was in the middle of his palm, which is unrealistic to begin with, so the staff may not have been trying to imply anything.

What I'm getting at is, neither of them were metagaming and trying to write something that couldn't be erased.

The whole katawaredoki scene took place in, what, 20 minutes? The best they could do was convey their feelings. For Taki that meant a sneaky confession. Maybe Mitsuha wanted to do the same, I don't know. But I don't buy for an instant that they analyzed the musubi mechanics and determined that a confession was the only way they'd remember each other. If they really wanted to be practical about this, they'd have started writing the moment they met instead of small-talking.

(I admit there's bias here because I found the standard interpretation cuter. And I suppose some people found an alternate explanation because they prefer the dual confession. Still, I think the standard reading is more romantic, in-character, and plausible given the context and their reactions).
>>
>>156408225
Taki and Okudera started their date at Yotsuha station and went to Roppongi. Mitsuha was at Tokyo station because that is where the Shinkansen arrive.
>>
>>156411816
I think it is supposed to be ambiguous. There's no way of telling from the movie which was being written.

However, I can't believe that Mitsuha didn't notice that Taki wrote three characters on her hand instead of two and would be slightly less surprised if she didn't know what the characters were from the feeling of him writing them.
>>
>>156411821
Right, thanks. So the whole "Mitsuha went to the same place the date started" thing is false then.
>>
>>156409656
They're lucid when swapped, but memories are hazy on swapping back

>So, what about when you see a calendar from the future on the street?
What would you think if you saw a calendar from 2020 on the roadside? Honestly, in Tokyo, it'd just blur into the ocean of signs and stuff.

Again, the problem isn't that there wasn't any evidence. Even if there were no calendars if the characters paid attention to their surroundings or even their damn phones they'd realize something was up. But they never consider time travel a thing, so anything that they see is rationalized as a mistake or a mistyping or something. EVEN the giant comet Mitsuha explicitly tells Taki about.
>>
>>156411821
>>156412143
Mitsuha went to several stations over the course of her trip, including the one where the date was supposed to end.
>>
>>156412450
Yeah, I did note she stopped on the bridge where the date ended, but I think that was chance. Taki wanted to take Okudera out to dinner, she just ended the date while they were walking there.
>>
>>156412174
They're lucid in the same way you're lucid in a dream. You buy into whatever is being presented as real, you don't really question the reality of the dream you just go along with it. It's highly likely they saw the date but the date was the date it was supposed to be in their dream. Since no undue focus was called onto it the dream logic maintained. You can see what happens when the dream collapses when Mitsuha's grandma looks at Taki in Mitsuha's body and says "you're dreaming aren't you?" suddenly the focus was brought to bear that thing weren't real and the dream shattered. Again, much like real dreams often times as soon as you realize you're dreaming, you wake up.
>>
>>156412534
Even if it's coincidence, though, it should be noted - after all, it's still noted in the pastebin that she also went onto the same stairs as the ending of the movie during her trip.
>>
Is there a BD of this movie yet?

>>156412653

My Nip is shit, but I recognize Yume to Shiriseba, on the bottom right title, as being an early working title for Kimi no Na wa. So I'm guessing these are engagement curves for the older versions of the script, with the main one being the final one.

Again, my Moonspeak is garbage, but I'll do what I can. Blue is just plot summary.

Introduction is just the introduction to the film.
Bottom text says something about a Tokyo boy and a village girl

Act 1, setup. 15 minutes. Starts with Mitsuha's life, then Kumihimo braiding, then the Kuchikamizake, "Konna Jinsei iya!" speech
Peaks at "Mitsuha in Taki's body"

Notes say "Introducing the Miko Heroine"

Act 2, conflict, 45 min.

Trouble at work
Fixing Senpai's skirt
"Omae wa dare da"?

Taki in Mitsuha's body
Teacher Talking about Tasokare
Fighting against the bullies
Taking the wine to the shrine
Then Date with Senpai
>something I can't read
Taking a train to meet Mitsuha

at 45 min mark, discovery of the lake
>something I can't read
>something I can't read
Something about Taki eating
Taki Drinking the wine
Taki as Mitsuha getting things done, meeting the mayor, etc.
Taki meeting Mitsuha
Mitsuha convincing the mayor
Stone falls

The notes read

Love comedy -> Will this love come true? -> Despair -> something something -> results of something.

Speaking of which, reminds me something from the novel.

The ribbon is actually connected to Katawaredoki. It's red, orange, and blue, like the sky at dusk, and in the novel Mitsuha is described a few times as "a girl who wears a ribbon the color of twilight." Interesting that the ribbon and the twilight are also the things tying the characters together.
