YOI is a single fujoshit anime with (even still!) minimal romance. BL manga has romance/sex but is never discussed by fujos the way these asexual children playing volleyball are.

If Fujos like canon gay then why do they sit around obsessing over asexual or heterosexual characters in other anime? Why is YOI the exception and not the rule (and even then just barely, has there been a single on screen love scene?)

I can only speak for myself, but it's because BL and yaoi manga/anime are actual garbage. The creators start out with the premise "two guys fall in love" and then they come up with the characters, setting, plot, themes AFTER. It's a recipe for shit.

On the flipside, you can have a series where the focus is on something substantial, with interesting characters and actual stuff happening in the story. The audience can become invested in the plot and enamored with the characters first, before they start 'shipping'.

It's not so different from heterosexual sutff, actually. The plot and acting in porn is a joke, but there's still a demand for porn (or yaoi) and sometimes it calls for some semblance of story.

Yuri on Ice is exactly the same shit, no one watched that for the ice skating or the very "complex plot and drama". I dropped the show myself when I realized it was just some kind of poor man's shoujo anime but with homos.

I actually love the ice skating parts in Yuri on Ice. It made me realize how low I've set the bar for anime in terms of pacing, art, and animation.

Have you seen Kaleido Star? Holy shit what a waste that anime is. I came for cool circus performer tricks, and what I'd get is about 20 seconds of half-assed acrobat animation, with the rest being close ups of characters reacting to the supposedly amazing performance that we don't see, or characters chit-chatting in their dorm rooms. Even the final performance that there was so much build-up to was a huge let down.

I'm only on episode 9 of YoI but I've been stunned at how I'm still not disappointed in it.

The humor is cringe, though. My one real complaint. But anyway, I'd like that anime even without all the gay shit and fan service. Possibly even more so without it.
