Comments don't fix it, instead use domain terminology and good naming conventions together with best practises recommended by Steve McConnell. Quality code is documentation of itself.

Pair programming might work for you as well. If someone else writes the code in your place, you'll have to break the problem down with them in such a way that they'll understand, and the code consequently ends up being more understandable too.

Also, try using test-driven development methods. I find it helps me force myself to keep things in smaller, more understandable parts.

I'll check those practises out but the thing is I'm the one who's been introducing those kind of optimizations to our workflow and pair/team programming just slows things down a lot for me whenever I just let my team's lead work things out aloud with everyone. I'd usually figure out the general solution within a minute of getting the email but at the time they were still reluctant to just hand sensitive problems over to me so I just went along with it till he felt like he worked out all the steps I'd need to follow.
