For me it is probably a bit of that. I had an okay time in high school. good grades, friends and social life etc. . . . But I never had a partner so do gravitate towards romance centered high school shows such as sakurasou. I'm sure plenty of people use it for their own missed opportunities.
At the end of the day it is all just fantasy.

Yeah, I don't quite get the appeal of shows with just girls in it and no romantic prospect whatsoever. It's just like all this cuteness is in idle running. Harem that is too obvious is just stupid of course. But while I kinda enjoy stuff like K-On or Highschool Fleet I could drop it at any time, because it isn't addictive at all.
