The truth is, whenever a berserk anime comes out, people shit on it. Everybody hated the 1997 series before the movies. Suddenly the movies come out and it becomes cool hate them while liking the 1997 slideshow.
The backgrounds looked alright, yeah, like most barely decent 90s anime. The characters were often off model though, the battle animations were non-existent and they didn't even were faithfully to the source material.
If I wanted only the still images to look good I would read the manga.

Please stop with this meme, yes the budget and time a studio dedicates to a series contributes to the animation quality but it's the people and staff behind the show that determine how good an anime looks.
Tetsuwan Birdy Decode had a pretty average budget but it had good animation directors and animators working on it so lots of the action scenes were well-animated despite the average budget. Another more popular example is that the One Punch Man and Mob Psycho anime look the way they do because of all the talented animators that worked on it.
This has more to do with the time spent on working on the animation before a show airs; obviously the production committee wanted an anime to coincide with the manga's return and so they were forced to start making an anime in a short period of time, so they went to studios that were free (Millepensee with GEMBA) and also that's why they use CGI, since it's much faster to churn out episodes instead of having to draw every single frame.
The reason why this adaptation is so bad is due to the lack of experience from pretty much the entire staff behind this. The director only made lolsorandumb 5-minute gag episodes and probably the entire staff of 3D animators were new to CGI animation.

Why Zodd is considered so strong? This fluffy jobber is all talk.
"hurrrr I only want to fight the strong!" he says, while destroying normal canon fodder humans left and right. He ignores they are just human while he got superhuman powers by some evil supernatural creatures. The first time he find a human who could actually fight him, instead of actually fighting fairly he assumes his apostle form and whines when the human can't fight. Not to mention the "weak" humans harmed him even in his apostle form.
And whenever he actually meets someone who isn't a monster, he loses. The only reason Skully didn't kill Zodd during the eclipse is because he was in a hurry to get Guts and Casca somewhere safe.
I look forward to seeing Zodd die like a bitch.

Being realistic, the reason Casca "fell in love" with Guts is because she felt like Griffith would never be hers right?
It's like the moment when a guy gives up on following his dreams and just settles down with whatever he can get.
At some point she even says to Guts that he is like Griffith, and it was in the same chapter they sleep together if I recall correctly. In the scene of the picture, something similar happened during the party. Casca and Guts dance together after Casca saw Griffith dancing with the princess.
Would Casca still want Guts if Griffith never was arrested?

Judging by previous works, the studios which would mostly fit berserk in my opinion are Bones or WIT.

Animation has only improved marginally if at all.
All the talking still looks horrendous and the action isn't even really that good and even when it's all 3D the anime still barely animates so you're left with guts talking to a stone faced mumbling beard while seemingly petrified sheep occupy the foreground. I thought an anime that is mainly 3D would at least have to cheat less than 2D anime. Framerate could also be higher if it's 3D.
Directing is still hot ass for action and basically everything else.
Some of the later models are improving and the sound design this episode was alright with some of the hit sounds making sense and no obvious clangs.
If they improve the shading then most of the anime would look passable at a glance as well.

The one thing that would really be improved by adding more seasons is probably the lightning fast pacing of this anime even though they can't go back on all the retcons and cuts now.

This is the truth. That cliffhanger was brutal for anime only fags like myself. Now finally after all these years I get to see the plot continue. After last season I was about to give up because the CGI was just so bad, but now the story is making up for it. After seeing the 97 anime it just felt like Guts would never get revenge. At least now there is hope and that saves it for me.

Berserk is a drama as much as it is about action.
Except for the fountain scene, which was pretty good in the movie, they cut a lot of important characterization scenes.
The reason that old faggot in the fort was obsessed with Griffith was never revealed in the movie, for example. That whole arc didn't make sense without knowing that Griffith was his fuckboy, and that the degenerate old man wanted to fuck him again.
