but it's probably the directing. They're probably told to use the voice of [archetype], which creates archetype voices. There's the tsundere voice, the cool guy voice, the old man voice et cetera.

I like Bell. I'm a sucker for a weak protagonist slowly surpassing his limits and growing stronger, even if I hate other aspects of the typical harem MC. I loved the Bell vs Minotaur fight.

This isn't inherrently bad as long as the execution is right. In my opinion (but I'm not a professional writer so take it as you will), these stoic, introverted female characters only work if they have a good supporting cast/character to back them up. I'm going to get a lot of "hurr durr normalfag" hate for this but I think Mikasa from AoT is a good example of this. She's as much of a "plank" as Ais is, but a lot of her personality and interaction is defined by her interactions with Eren. As long as Ais lacks such a character, she will always remain flat (figuratively) and boring, and Elfiya isn't doing a good job (yet) of being that character.

In that context, my favorite Mikasa moment has to be the court scene. I know that it's relatively minor and pretty tame compared to the more action packed moments, but seeing the otherwise stoic Mikasa put on an expression of pure rage was entertaining. The best moments these characters have are when they break out of character. This is also why their smiles are the best smiles.

I begin doubting that production committee even trying to make this seriously.

I actually thought that S1 was pretty competent all the way around. For Bell's part, he went through some intense shit, and he was neither a cardboard box in human form nor a /b/-tier faggot who's personality begins and ends with his dick.

I'll admit that my expectations are bottom rung when it comes to anything that gives a male MC who's design doesn't yell "I'm the one that you're supposed to be paying attention to here" more than two love interests, though. As a result, Danmachi was a pleasant surprise.
