But there's only so much hope you can cling to. When she kissed him and he didn't react, that last bit of hope vanished. By the time Lelouch basically declared war on the rest of the world in the council chamber, she had already abandoned him. From that point of view, it could be argued that she never actually betrayed him at all.

Honestly no idea - I can't even put forward a theory. When all the temples started vibrating around the world, despite knowing what Charles' intentions were, I had no idea what might happen if he were to succeed.

Definitely the weakest and most unsatisfying element of the overarching plot, which is why I'm glad it didn't form part of the finale; it got dealt with in the space of one episode and Lelouch used it as a stepping stone to further his ambitions.
