You need yaku to make a playable hand. Basically, the tiles in your hand have to fit within a certain pattern for it to work, i.e. all triplets, all of the same suit, same sets of each suit, triple dragons or triple of your wind, etc. It's recommended you learn the yaku beneath the game because there are a few you can only use with a riichi hand rather than open.

some tips that might be helpful:
- the closer to the center (number 5 of any suit), the more dangerous the discard is, because it has more combination possibilities (for example, 4 can complete 23_, 3_5, _56, besides the triplet 44_ and the pair 4_)
- if your hand isn't worth much points (not many or valuable yaku, not enough dora/red dora tiles), and the opponents' might be worth a lot, it's not worth to keep attacking, so defend your points to not have to fight to recover them. Defense is less dependant on chance than offense is.

Tile efficiency is largely intuitive if you know probability.

Scoring isn't nearly as complicated as it looks. You don't need to know anything beyond 40 fu in 98% of situations, so there are only like a dozen scores to remember.

20 -> pin fu and tsumo
30 -> pin fu ron, closed tsumo, most open hands
40 -> closed ron without pin fu, most open toitoi, most hands with a kan
