Thank you. I have been having a blast so far but there are some things I don't understand like it saying "no multiplier" when I try to Ron.
>>156180053
No multiplier means you've got jackshit in your hand and that you should study your yaku.
>>156180053
You need yaku to make a playable hand. Basically, the tiles in your hand have to fit within a certain pattern for it to work, i.e. all triplets, all of the same suit, same sets of each suit, triple dragons or triple of your wind, etc. It's recommended you learn the yaku beneath the game because there are a few you can only use with a riichi hand rather than open.
>>156180053
Eventually memorize this list:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Mahjong_yaku
Keep playing, and eventually, you'll know that list.
>>156180108
>>156180138
>>156180193
Thank you all. I think my biggest block mentally from playing the game was leaning Yaku. I understood quite a bit from watching Saki and Akagi while reading a wiki, but just Yaki always eluded me.

Why you gotta hurt me so Tenhou, and sorry to the folks from the first game
>>156183889
you can also stack hands.
for instance: all pon hand can also be all one suit. you get points for both.
basically if you call a chi and open up your hand- you're going to want a set of dragons for a quick point, or you'll want to have all one suit. all dots, all sticks, or all man. that's how I like to do it.
i lied. my favorite hand is all sets having a terminal, but you're not ready for that, my son.

>>156187642
kan counts as pon
you can also win off the replacement tile you draw from making a kan. that's worth a point known as the Rinshan Kaihou
>>156187781
thanks
is that lesbian show good for learning? i hear one of them use kan a lot.
>>156187642
Winning with the next tile.
There are fewer hands you can get with an open/closed kan though. But the dora gamble is nice.
>>156187879
Does one have to win with the next tile or is it a dead game if you don't?
>>156188077
Nah, you just have to have a hand that can win with either an open or closed pon. Kan counts as pon for hand construction, but only closed kan counts as pon if called.
Couldn't you just treat the kan as a regular triplet meld and still be able to get toitoi?
>>156188163
Yeah, but only if it's called. If it's in your hand uncalled, it's a triplet meld and a remainder tile.
>>156188194
So Pon is triple. Kan is 4 of the same and chii is a sequence? With an open hand can you combine them?
>>156174358
I'd rather we'd have a good old fashioned duel
HANATE MONSUTA
IKEEEE HUNGURII BURGAAAAA
>>156188311
Yes, maybe. Open kan or open pon can combine with an open chi if the pon/kan are a relevant honour tile or you're going for open tanyao. It depends on the yaku
>>156188311
As long as you remember the winning hands don't be afraid to call tiles like a madman. Although I have the feeling that closed hands are better.

no, Kaiji it's an average person, which sometimes can win when pushed to the limits (especially by countering cheats). Akagi is a genius among geniuses, full of both skill and luck. He can cheat, but rarely does so, and would never abuse it long enough to allow kaiji to use it against him
in pretty much all situations, Kaiji would be rekt.

>>156179172

>>156203000
opponent calling non end tiles? the end tiles are safe (unless dragons)
opponent calling single suit? don't deal that fuckin suit.
in time, you will learn to read what the opponent has based on his calls, and discards. of course if he's got a totally closed hand, fuckin good luck. that's what makes mahjong so fun. how long can you bluff?
>>156203154
Well, comp players on >>156179172 tend to have closed hand 99% of the time.
>>156203154
yeah, the essense is you know your opponent has to score multipliers to declare a winning hand. so how is he doing this?
use process of elimination.
>>156203274
as do I
>>156202355
Learn to go defence mode, if facing early riichi.
Don't discard terminal and honor tiles in the late game if you see none of them been discarded.
Go for open sanshoku doujun or ikkitsuukan, if you keep getting bad hand from drawing.
>>156203154
>opponent calling non end tiles? the end tiles are safe
I know it's rare, but this doesn't work on open sanshoku doujun or ikkitsuukan though.
>>156203852
yep. everyone gets bit by a ron. even akagi. you have to find your own tells from the flow.
>>156203852
also I like to study the game after playing.
for example one of these last games I thought I was playing well defensively. Turns out I was just paranoid when I look at what the opponent had.
But that's good some times.
>>156203000
some tips that might be helpful:
- the closer to the center (number 5 of any suit), the more dangerous the discard is, because it has more combination possibilities (for example, 4 can complete 23_, 3_5, _56, besides the triplet 44_ and the pair 4_)
- if your hand isn't worth much points (not many or valuable yaku, not enough dora/red dora tiles), and the opponents' might be worth a lot, it's not worth to keep attacking, so defend your points to not have to fight to recover them. Defense is less dependant on chance than offense is.
- suji: if an opponent discards a numbered tile, the 3 tiles adjacent to it are situationally safe (for example, if he/she discarded 1 pin, he/she couldn't discard it from a 123 pin sequence, so you can discard 4 pin, unless the opponent needs it for another group like 3_5 pin, _56 pin, 44_ pin or 4_ pin)
- ura suji: if an opponent discards a numbered tile, the adjacent tiles and the ones 4 tiles away are situationally dangerous (for example, if an opponent discards 5 pin, he could've had 3 and 5 pin, drew 2 pin and discarded 5 pin, waiting on 1 and 4 pin, or he could've had 5 and 7 pin, drew 8 pin and discarded 5 pin, waiting on 6 and 9 pin)
- forgot the name for this one: if an opponent discards a numbered tile, the 2 tiles adjacent to it are situationally dangerous (for example, if an opponent discards 5 pin, he could've had a pair of 5 pin, drew a 4 pin, discarded 5 pin and is waiting on 3 and 6 pin, or he could've drawn a 6 pin, discarded 5 pin and is waiting on 4 and 7 pin)
- forgot the name for this one too: if you see 1 and 6, or 2 and 7, or 3 and 8, or 4 and 9 of one suit, suspect that the opponent's hand at the time could've had the following tiles: 1_34_6, or 2_45_7, or 3_56_8, or 4_67_9, so in these cases, the wait could've been, respectively, 2/5, or 3/6, or 4/7, or 5/8.

forget about suji for defense in /a/, everyone's off making open hon/chin-itsuu, a yakuman, or raw riichi on closed waits
Didn't Akagi cheat in every game he played?
Can someone explain how ura-dora works in this case?
>>156206499
Ura dora are the tiles underneath the dora, and only show up after a win with a riichi.

>4:27AM
Why are we still here? Just to suffer?
>>156206551
I know that, but what does the ura-dora mean for the points in the picture? Like, how do you count it?
>>156206716
1 dora = 1 han.
Therefore, the more dora, the better. With that said, refer to a scoring table, and you'll see how significant additional han can be.
>>156206716
One of the ura-dora indicators is 2m. This makes 3m a dora. You have 4 copies of the 3m from the kan you declared so you get 4 han.
>>156206716
>>156206794
Here is a scoring table. In two tables, the top is for non-dealers and the bottom is for dealers.
The left column is the count for han. Going down the line, you see how points drastically increase as han increases.
Hey anon, have you ever made a hand "Chankan"?

Look at what the rinshan draw was going to be.

What do these words mean?
>>156208544
I play with this. Only in offline mode tho,
It's also in Japanese text so make sure you know which buttons are chii, pon, Kan, etc.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.co.hangame.s_mahjong
There's also this
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mjguy.android.games.mjfjp
Which I play with my friends via Bluetooth, text and the yaku names are also in English so that's a plus

- 3-sided wait means that in that case, the hand of the left player is waiting on 3 sou, 6 sou or 9 sou (sou = the bamboo-looking suit)
- takame means that in that case, 9 sou is the wait that gives that hand the highest value (because in this case it completes itsuu, the yaku where you have 3 groups of the same suit, said groups being 123, 456 and 789, while the other waits wouldn't have completed it)
Anyone know where I can find the Zenkoku-hen soundtrack?

This game was all over the place. GG

Multi-sided waits ruin me. I lose track of people's discards trying to figure out the odds on stuff like 12245777.
>could have gotten three dragons if I didn't discard the green one at the start
Huh, so it goes on if you're at 0.
>>156217056
That was both my first time being unable to declare riichi because I didn't have enough points and also my first time seeing someone have 0 points in any online game
>>156205358
>suji
specializing in this would be pointless, as it's consistently a trap metagame that goes back and forth.
>>156217310
Knowing how to suji trap is a nice tool to have, but it's just not worth the effort in 7447. Suji doesn't work against beginners because they don't have as many predictable waits.
>>156217409
To expand on this it's like poker. You don't bluff a fish because he will call you down with garbage, you play fundamentals and wait for the opponent to make an obvious mistake and punish them.
That game was awful. Couldn't even cumback with a non-dealer haneman.
I can't wait until I graduate being fucking shit against a computer player and understand scoring.
>>156219922
Tile efficiency is largely intuitive if you know probability.
Scoring isn't nearly as complicated as it looks. You don't need to know anything beyond 40 fu in 98% of situations, so there are only like a dozen scores to remember.
20 -> pin fu and tsumo
30 -> pin fu ron, closed tsumo, most open hands
40 -> closed ron without pin fu, most open toitoi, most hands with a kan

I orgasmed.
The thread's still up? It'd be nice if it survived until I got home, but in the likely case that it doesn't, I recommend heading to the mahjong thread on /jp/. There are lots of resources for people trying to learn the game or learn about strategy there, and I think most of the experienced players from /a/ have moved over there too so they can give tips and advice.
>>156188874
did the fucking sky fill with cherry blossoms?
>>156187829
its bad for learning because you will learn to use kan a lot and proceed to lose a lot
Osomatsu also had a mahjong episode.
