It was an inconsistent mess of edge and shonen. The author liberally used death and gruesome demises as a means to try to raise the stakes, but when you introduce a character only to murder them not long thereafter, it becomes pointless to even care. The fact that the more interesting characters either died early or died anti-climatically doesn't help.

Then there's the anime original ending that basically turned off most people from even finishing the manga. While it does end differently, either way they screwed the pooch. It doesn't help that the end story was still anti-climactic in some ways even in the manga.

Also shipping wars ruin shonen and AgK is no exception.
