As much as her name is in the title, Madoka isn't really the protagonist of Madoka until pretty much the very end.
And I think it's important to make the distinction because the bleak tone that Madoka has for the greatest part is something completely absent from Matoi, for example. It's people expecting something that sombre and dark from every show with sparkly girls screaming attack names at each other that makes people snub perfectly good shows that just want to play the magical girl game completely straight.

I don't even understand Madoka being edgy and all that. It's a story about hope. As long as the Mahou Shoujo is bright, fun and colorful I can like it. I didn't watch Ikusei but it just looks so depressing with all the deaths. It feels like it wants to be Madoka but didn't understand what made Madoka good. Izetta, FlipFlappers and Matoi are all enjoyable and so is Twin Angel Break. As long as the girls are fun, I can enjoy a mahou shoujo. Mahou Shoujos were never really suppose to be plot heavy, which is why PreCure is still enjoyable every year.

I don't think Madoka is edgy. The deaths all had meaning and substance behind it, and in the end they always comeback. Edgy to me is in the same style as Akame ga Kill where everything is grim and dark. Madoka really isn't like that to me.
