Funnier jokes, more original more memorable characters and individual moments. Kicked off the cute girls doing cute things genre by establishing all the character bases that every other Moe show would follow. Had better source material and was way more influential. About the only thing it didn't have was the art and backgrounds, but Azudai comes from that awkard phase when animators were leaving ink and paint behind and were trying to figure out how to do things with the computer. That's probably why it was made in the first place, they needed something simple to animate in order to make it work with the technology.

Azumanga was a better comedy but K-On had much better group dynamics and better character progression/development. It was influential but definitely didn't invent the archetypes that it used. Tomo and Yomi are just a boke-tsukkomi pairing, for instance.
