Who was even the main character?
I thought it was that black haired MC looking guy, but then the focus was on that gold haired guy that showed up and pretty much stole the black haired guys love interest in the first epsiode.
And then like 80% of the series was a flashback about the loligirl that can transform and some other guys.

This was long ago all I even remember was that this was a complete mess.

It was clearly both of them. Early on the story focused more on Nagi because the plot revolves around him, but then it got inverted around once the F chip fell in Masataka's hands and it became obvious Nagi would be the final boss. It kinda made sense to put Mastaka in the backburner too considering how overpowered he was compared to most everyone else, but it really could have been handled better.

I really can't forget the fact that most of TT's anime adaptation was a damn flashback.

Both this and Air Gear started off one thing and then just became a mess later on. Air Gear wasn't as much of a mess as Tenjou Tenge but still.

I felt things were going to go downhill from there, and apparently I was right.

But it's not. at all. "Protag fights a guy way stronger than him and gets stomped" is a pretty common thing, even back then. Tenjou Tenge just had a violent version of it.
