I really couldn't tell if they meant for the ending to be so horrible as a joke or they didn't even realize how sad it was

Kuma miko last few episodes were shit though, thanks to that shitty director for putting an original ending instead of following the manga.

That was the biggest "Fuck you" moment in anime. Seriously, the backlash from that to the producing company was so well deserved. I hope they went out of business for how fucking horrible they were to a fictional child. Nothing about what happened to her in the end was acceptable.

In every episode, we see Machi as socially inept. She's bad with technology, doesn't understand the city, and so on. In the last few episodes, she visits the city, but as a mascot for her town in an idol pageant. The stress gets to her, and she runs away before it starts. She believes that she is being hounded behind her back, though her competition fully supports her as proper friends. After a silly romp through the forest, the bear arrives in the city, posing as a talking mascot. Machi works up her own courage, a surprising twist, and returns to the stage. She does what she can, goofs a little, and walks off. All is well until she returns home; mentally regressed and incredibly dependent on her bear friend. She was so badly traumatized that she refuses to leave her home.

I may have one or two details a bit off, but this is what happened that caused anons to get upset. It was entirely original content, and the show's sales suffered greatly because of it.

Machi WANTS to go to the city. She's the type of village girl that hates being in the sticks and thinks the city life is amazing. This is the premise of the show. Now the bear, Natsu, is very attached to her because they grew up together. Naturally he wouldn't want her to go to the city because he wouldn't be able to live with her there, being a bear and all. The show is about Natsu making challenges for Machi to prepare for the city life like going to a mall and buying things. This culminates in the final episode where Machi does the idol thing. She does do her best but her persecution complex made her think the audience applauding her were jeering her and throwing tomatoes. Natsu is in attendance unbeknownst to Machi after letting her go alone but later changing his mind because he doesn't want Machi to leave. He records her entire performance in video so he has proof that the audience wasn't actually mad. When Machi gets home traumatized and crying about the audience booing her down, the anime makes a point of showing Natsu holding the damn video recorder and throwing it aside just to tell Machi that she doesn't have to try anymore and to forget about going to the city. Then the show rubs it in by showing a Machi talking like a child and saying she doesn't what the things that she had previously bought from the city are.

The show attempted a status-quo ending by traumatizing the main character to the point of infantile regression and repression.

Everybody going crazy trying to predict the plot and coming up with theories. Only unlike Glasslip stuff did eventually happen. It was just really stupid.

Kuma Miko was supposed to be a tragic deconstruction from the first episode, it was just so well done that in the moment nobody realized, and everyone lost their shit.
Looking back at it now, it's obvious they knew perfectly what they were doing: like other shows in the same vein, like Re:Zero and Madoka, it was initially marketed as a genre show, but the warning signs are there from the very first episodes. And like those other shows, as it progresses the darker undertones become more pronounced, up to the multi-episode spergout that is the finale.

All the otaku autists going insane and wailing about the last few episodes completely missed the point of the fucking show.

The idol outfit and the crappy meet and greet thing in the hick town were in the manga, as well as Yoshio kind of wanting her to be an idol. They roped some other chapters into it though to try and stretch the crappy idol thing into an overarching storyline.

Going to the city in the last two chapter was anime original, but also not entirely. Basically they took a manga chapter where Machi has a two panel nightmare about city people throwing rocks at her and stretched it into two episodes. The stuff about giving up going to the city and then eating cake at the end is in the manga too, but the anime really really REALLY fucked up the execution and made it seem a lot more fucked up and dark than the manga did.


That describes pretty much all the gags in the series actually. In the manga the focus is more on how much of a old fasbioned hick she is with only a quick panel of suffering. In the anime, they put the focus on the suffering and then heaped on even more. Remember how Machi was terrified of Yankee girl randomly even before she started messing with her? That's because in the manga the chapter about going to tbe shopping mall and having a panick attack about her clothes came first, she was still scared from it which is why Yoshio asked the yankee to take her out clothes shopping. The anime for no clear reason flipped the order of these, making it seem like machi was just being retarded and Yoshio randomly wanted her to go clothes shopping.

It should also be noted that the manga continues from where the anime left off. It basically becomes Machi's small town adventures for a few chapters before she starts to get interested in the city and modern stuff again.

Only the stuff with actually going to the city was. Basically what happens in the manga:

>That night Machi has a nightmare about city people throwing rocks and calling her a hick.
>Wakes up crying and tells Natsu she's never moving to the city (He films this).
>The next day they sit around eating cake Natsu ordered off of Amazon and Machi thinks "Amazon Saito" is a person from south america who delivers cake (Anime screwed up this joke).

The anime stretched it into two episodes and then threw on the end bits with extra suffering.

The difference is likely that the City of Sendai wanted tourism, so they sponsored the show and wanted their town featured. The result is Machi going to Sendai and having a hallucination. When in the manga she just had a nightmare.

Hallucinations are not funny. It is a real medical condition and the change is too extreme.

You know whats really funny? They were really gung ho about supporting the anime too to bring in tourism. There was even a big event planned around bears at a local wild life park to tie into it.

And then that summer after the series aired the area had a record number of bear attacks/killings.

I mean, the ending was definitely a bit cruel, but not that bad. They should've just had her say she didn't like the city and wanted to stay in her cute village or whatever without the hallucinations of people throwing rocks etc.

I just watched the last 2 episodes, and I don't get why people are so mad. She just doesn't belong in crowds. She was like a fish out of water. I thought it was pretty great she learned her place of belonging was the place she knew best.

I liked the ending, I expected a happy ending but was positively suprised by this ending with the dark undertones.
And Natsu was the person to root for anyway

I don't remember the ending being as atrocious as people are stating, and certainly not bad enough for the guy to lose his job. Not all slices of life taste sweet, some are bitter and it's refreshing to see that in anime every now and then.

Nobody lost their job. What happened is during the backlash the writer went and deleted a bunch of his social media accounts and an IP from his area attempted to edit his wiki page to remove kumamiko from it.

People are over exaggerating, but it was pretty bad. Considering how poorly the gags were handled overall through this series and considering its supposed to be another gag in the manga, the ending was just another botched joke and not an attempt at some darket theme or bittersweet ending. They just really fucked it up like they did with a lot in the series.
