I found the opposite problem. Incredibly rushed, with a lot of plot just thrown at you, character development thrown to the wolves, and pages upon pages of utterly boring pseudo-physics

I don't think you actually read the manga. The series was incredibly rushed, character development was disregarded in favor of plot, which was also rushed.
