Scanlation thread.

What are you working on?
>>
I started to translate an old Pokemon Doujinshi, but it was too hard so I gave up.
There is no way I could translate, redraw, etc. a whole manga on my own, which was the whole reason I started learning Japanese in the first place.
>>
>>155900506
Why the fuck not bitch? I've done it before, it's not a big deal.
>>
>>155900506

That's why you find someone to work with instead of doing it all on your own.

Has anyone fixed EBJ script yet? I broke some time this week after an update.
>>
>>155900506
As the others have said, find someone to work with. Redrawing is possibly the most taxing thing someone can do relative to scanlation. Find a redrawer/cleaner, and kill 80% of your work. You can still patch up their work if you don't completely like the results; but you won't have to do all kinds of bullshit anymore.

Are the Rakuten coupons kill forever? Wasn't there another coupon that could be used by regular members that went up from time to time?

I might look into fixing it again, I have an issue of Rex coming up and it looks like ass on Rakuten for some reason. Not any time in the next two weeks though.

I haven't looked really recently, but I'm pretty sure coupons are 100% dead.

Still looking for a cleaner for this by the way.

Hopefully it can be fixed, I also have some issues coming up in the next couple weeks to rip.

Anyone have a pastebin/guide on how to rip from EbookJapan? I heard their raws are really good, so I want to see if I can try using those instead of ordering from Japan.

EBJ broke everything again, have to wait for whichever anon decides to take up the task of fixing the script.

Street racing, touge and wangan. Some rallying. It's mainly about a middle aged guy who rediscovers an old Group B Starion belonging to his boss that he never got to race since Group B got canned before it could run. He fixes it up and takes it out on the streets. It's bit of a twist on the usual coming of age story, this time it's an older guy coming to terms with his own age.

It's all car stuff basically.

I released this loli porn last night
https://exhentai.org/g/1051374/404897839d/

For the first time I tried stretching the dialogue font up to 115% vertically and shrinking it down to 95% horizontally, that way it takes up more space in the bubbles, without deforming the font too much.

Maybe it's an autistic thing to care about, but I think it looks nice.

No, but the first 4 chapters have absolutely garbage scans. You're better off taking the ones from nyaa and cleaning those. As for the translation, I don't know if it's worth it.

Depending on how many sfx there are, I typeset dialogue first on all the pages, then typeset all the sfx so I don't have to keep switching from one font to the other every page. I feel it saves me some time.

Vanilla Spider needs a TL, the one who signed up only did a couple chapters before disappearing. The first volume's almost done, just redoing the existing chapters with tank scans since the previous group outright skipped some bubbles and was fairly liberal in their translation.

I wish I could find someone to edit stuff for me, I could translate and they could edit, I've joined groups before but it takes literally multiple months for a single chapter and then they just disband. Nothing in particular just random doujin's when I feel like it because I hate doing editing to be consistent for a series. I would definitely want to do a series if I didn't have to edit and the editor actually put in time, but most people do like an hour every other day at most, and maybe an hour a month at least. Realistically I would love to do a chapter a day.
>>

Yes, amazon sells some cheap Huion model for about $40, but I'm still kind of on the fence about it. It's not really going to do anything that can't be done with the usual fonts.

It is, in two conditions. They can either serve as a massive quality control for translators with imperfect or non-native English skills, or they can be another translator who checks to make sure that the original translator did not make any mistakes.

The first one is necessary in many cases, and the second can be very useful for high-quality, large-scale scanlation projects/groups.

Don't bother. Even if it takes 1 millisecond to remove the artifacts, that's 1 millisecond wasted. Just clean the text, redraw if needed and typeset.

Why 17 colors?
>>
>>155954208
>The 17 color tradition, though flawed in its original reasoning (ookla's legacy, lol), works pretty well for most pages. Generally 15-20 is what you want for most pages, and theoretically there should be a stepwise drop in filesize from 17 to 16 colors beyond pure palette reduction, but in practice this difference is negligible (with 16 colors and appropriate processing, you can go down to a 4bit png instead of an 8bit, but there smaller filesize with 16 colors is almost completely due to the loss of the extra color, as opposed to going from 8 to 4bits). Feel free to use fewer or more colors as needed, or use other color reduction algorithms.

Can you ask him what the deal is with that specific project? Are they out a translator? Or is it somehow taking them more than a year per chapter for editing? As I was told that they were editing chapter 2, about a year ago. I can help with one circumstance, but not the other.

Haven't bothered with any of the cropping or automation bits, might do that later when I actually do need it again. Only works on FF with GreaseMonkey, and I changed up the thing to rip using arrow keys because I'm asshole that's why.

>>
>>155965060
I don't think having pride in your work is petty. I just finished working on a doujin, and it happens to be something good by an art I like, so I want the scanlation quality to reflect that.

My list a requirements.
-No dust in the black or whites.
-No detail loss in the screen tones.
-Double/triple check the translation.
-Double/triple check for English typos.
-Make sure all text is centered.
-Redraw all SFXs.
-All pages are equal height and width.
-Covers stitched together.
-Separate fonts for dialog, thought, side text and narration.

I don't expect everyone to put that much effort into things, but like I said, I also see no problem with taking pride in your work.

Nor do I, but that's not related to the definition of 'petty'. Most people would never notice the specifics of the work you did if you released two versions; one with dust and one without. That's not an attack against its value, but a simple observation. And, you say yourself in your post:
>I don't expect everyone to put that much effort into things

Pretty much what that other anon said. Also make sure your fonts are not too top heavy or bottom heavy.
If you don't know if the font you've picked is good or bad, then just go with Wild Words (either the all caps version or the lowercase version). You can't possibly fuck up that one.
>>
>>155967454
Why WildWords? Why not Anime Ace?
>>
>>155967644
Not him but I find AA to be a bit too 'broad' to my liking but if you like it, sure. It's not a bad font either.
>>
>>155967289
>>155967362
Here's some stupid-ass fonts that you probably shouldn't use, unless you have very specific reasons to do so. The first two are more outright bad; the second two have exceptionally few purposes.
>>

>offer to do all the rest of the work (cleaning, typing, etc)

Why this keeps happening?

Anime ace's A is too top heavy. Other than that, it's not that bad. Astro city is better in my opinion, but it's wider than WW so keep that in mind if you have narrow bubbles.

>Redraw all SFXs

As a reader I despise that. Erasing chunks of art that do not need to be erased is so terrible. It's why I kind of dislike almost any official English releases, they replace good art with generic wavy fonts that say "sploosh!"

Redrawing SFX is only acceptable if you're a genuinely good artist who can recapture the look of the original

What are your thoughts on translating a long Japanese title into English? Something like "Kaguya wants to be confessed to"
I can't help but feel guilty thinking about the people who knows the Japanese title but can't search for it because we changed it. But on the other hand, no one would be able to remember the title if we didn't. A long and unrecognizable title will make the manga less visible too.
>>
>>155973505
You're translating a series. The title should probably be the first shit to translate. I don't get this obsession over leaving stuff in moon.

There's no real way to make a guide for drawing SFXs. It's just normal artistic skill.
>>
>>155978023
>It's just normal artistic skill.
>artistic skill.
Then I'd better give up.
>>
>>155978081
It's not like it's the same as redrawing a screen tone. That's just copying something else with the exact same pattern.

In order to re draw a complex SFX like something here >>155970804 you have to do it free hand, as there is nothing to copy.

But it's not that hard, because you SFX are never THAT complex, so it takes a low level of artistic skill to recreate them.
