What does /a/ think about Five Star Stories? Just finished reading what was translated and was surprised to hear that nobody has bothered to finish it since the early 2000's.
Closest thing to an anime/manga equivalent of Dune out there.
I'LL NEVER GET TO SEE GOTHICMADE
TWO NUKES WERE DEFINITELY NOT ENOUGH

Didn't it have a long ass hiatus? it probably killed interest, though I don't know how popular it was before that.
I've only seen the film version but I liked it, it's like Star Wars with Mechas on Stilettos, manga is still on my backlog as of now.

Spectacular stuff. Excellent art, design, and world building. Political and war situations are portrayed better than most other anime and manga out there. Current arc, Majestic Stand, is equivalent in complexity to the political tension of WWII and Middle East crisis. Retcon designs were strange but everything else stayed the same. Shame you guys can't read this stuff. I would translate it but I don't have the manpower or time. Especially with all the long-ass bios and descriptions in each volume.
Also, the art books are nothing short of gorgeous.

However it is very fetishistic

The anime was good, albeit somewhat overrated. I'm surprised more groups didn't start translating manga when fansubbing died
Oldfag here. I think everyone including readers and Kadokawa used to love it in the 80's and some people thought it'd become big like Gundam and Macross. Unfortunately It missed the chance by existing too late. No one expected SF and real robot went downhill since late 80's and Shounen shit would take over.
Still remember when looking at the price tag of the kits made by balls feel hurt.

I think the designs are a little too far out there to be a macross or gundam
>>155877827
The designs are a big reason for why it used to be so popular. Completely unlike anything before back then.

Another big reason it never reached the level of Gundam or Macross: no TV series and very limited and expensive merchandise. Mortar Headds are still sought after designs decades after they were unveiled.

I've always thought it was part of the appeal, as someone who isn't into mecha it's the unique designs that are easily recognisable that caught my attention.
"i have a fetish for underweight women and i wanted to be a fashion designer" the manga
still i like it

Then you don't understand the 80's and underestimated the 80's real robot faggotry.
There was about a decade period when injection plastic models became so obsolete that everyone abandoned. Garage kit (not figures, the ones you need to build and paint) became everyone's new hotties and MH of FSS was like the holy grail to the mecha fans.
The situation changed again when bandai advanced their models and figures to G kit level nowadays.

He actually did study fashion design in college though

exactly

FSS is kind of like the Japanese Prince Valiant, it's the manga that's been attached to NewType magazine since it began publication so most readers will know what it is at some point.

It's fucking great.
> was surprised to hear that nobody has bothered to finish it since the early 2000
The thing is that the translations it had even before that were official ones, by Nagano's own company. As far as I know, no fan translator has ever released any of it. It's got tons of text and, according to one guy on /m/ who decided to translate it and almost immediately gave up, lots of difficult language.

Damn, was it that bad?
>>155880995
FSS has a blend of Chinese, French, German, English, and various dialects of Japanese... and this was just in one volume.
Nagano is nuts.

Not the same, but The Incal is a Dune comic by that crazy Chilean who was doing that one Dune movie.
