I actually don't hate JJ and kind of felt bad for him when everyone ditched him because he's autistic and out of touch. It's hard to tell when Otabek was farther away from the rink he could have still been staring at him at that point. The way they edited it made it seem so. Also doesn't change the fact that he had a smug look on his face but choked anyway and saw Fairy and Otabek as the main people looking down on him. It heavily suggests he has insecurities then and they are at the forefront of those and would make sense given the context and his constant going out of his way to fuck with Fairy.

It's not just that Kubo's explanation is unsatisfactory and dissapointing but it practically goes against what is shown.

I think what it probably is is just Otabek having an intense disposition in general, and even moreso when he's just finished skating his heart out. He's serious about what he does, he's hardworking, and his skating is exemplary of that.
